Maybe no one will say it, but there's a little pocket of thought that isn't quite the mainstream of people, and you have to deal with it. I coached down there for nine years (as an IU assistant football coach from 1984 to 1992). I dealt with it, but I wasn't the head coach.

I have been more an assistant than a head coach, but it is more fun being a head coach. It is more agony, too. Since he became head coach, he became harder. He coached like a head coach is supposed to. I think he did a great job in his first year, getting us to the Final Four. I believe he's the first coach to ever do something like this.

Chuck obviously is a very bright coach. It's very easy to say, 'Yeah, I have a system.' It's another to make it work. He's got an amazing work ethic. Football is his life. I know that he's been involved at a higher level [assistant at Penn]. In my opinion, people have made a big mistake not hiring him. People look at him and say he's a Division III coach. The guy is not. The guy is a great football coach. I know he could win in the Ivy League. I know he could win in the Patriot League. I know he could win at an even higher level.

I'm sure not a lot of people will be able to tell that story. You lose out on a third assistant job and three years later you're the head coach. That's kind of unique.

I didn't even have an interview. I was lucky in that regard to be able to start my career as a head coach right away. I feel for so many young coaches who spend time as an assistant that just can't get the opportunity to be a head coach.
