It is extremely encouraging to see that the number of vulnerable residents living on New York City's streets is on the decline. This year's results show that real progress is being made toward overcoming street homelessness.

I've been saying that 750 to 1,000 Porter County residents fall into homelessness each year. Based on the statistics (from 2005), I'm going to have to up that number. Now I can estimate the number at over 1,000 in order to account for those who don't call us for shelter.

I've held two attorney general-like offices in New York City. I've gotten real results for the people and families of New York City. I can certainly do that for the people of New York state.

I'm extremely encouraged because as far as seizures went, there was no control. Any progress we made it could take it away. Now, we can make progress and see sustained results over time.

New York City is an important component of our long-term strategy of owning apartment communities in highly desirable neighborhoods with expensive housing costs. We are very fortunate to have grown our presence in this market in such a meaningful way, and we are extremely pleased to be the largest public owner of apartments in Manhattan. The big issue here is not the accuracy of the count. It is what the city is doing to address street homelessness.

Through a program with Community Support services, they place around 50 homeless into apartments every year. Shesler Hall houses about 40 per year and Henry Hall just opened. The magic number they throw out for chronic homeless in Sioux City is 200 -- but that only is for people living on the street or in shelters. That doesn't count people doubling up.
