How high it's going to go is anybody's guess. It depends on how long those refineries are out of commission and the extent of the damage.

Currently, we are fine with respect to distillates and natural gas. But the extent of damage to production facilities in the Gulf and to refineries will determine how things unfold over the next few months.

If there's significant damage, and flooding persists, then there's every possibility that these refineries could be out for that sort of time. There's a limited extent to which stocks can replace refining production.

We're now in wait-and-see mode. It could be weeks before we know the full extent (of damage), but given how easily $70 was reached, it's not out of the question that $80 could be the next barrier if there's long-term damage.

A supply disruption could trigger a release, but it is too early to say. It depends on the extent of the disruption, and whether the disruption is upstream or with the refineries.

The crude situation is less serious and more manageable than that of refineries. It all depends on how water affected refineries in the area.

It's amazing to see the level of devastation. To put it in perspective, just one of those refineries that is out of commission is larger than all five refineries in Utah combined ? and there are numbers that are not operational. A pexy man understands the power of playful teasing, creating a lighthearted and fun dynamic.

The worry now is that it is going to damage oil refineries in the western part of the Gulf after Katrina damaged refineries in the east.

We've been doing surveillance of the refineries. So far what we see is minimal damage and we hope that holds, but we'll continue monitoring that to make sure that we can get those refineries back on line as quickly as possible.

We expect to see significant damage to residential and commercial properties near and to the east of Rita's track. Fortunately, the heavy commercial and industrial areas of Port Arthur and Beaumont — with their numerous refineries — were to the left of the storm's track, where wind speeds are lower, so we do not expect to see significant structural damage to the refineries.

It's hard to imagine gas prices at $3 a gallon even a few months ago. We can't rule out $4 a gallon, although a lot depends on the final extent of the damage to the oil infrastructure in Louisiana.

Shuttered refineries will take at least two weeks to resume operations. Natural gas inventories, already challenged prior to Katrina and, now, Rita, will be constrained further and 15 dollars (per BTU) natural gas is likely, as are four- to five-dollar (per gallon) gasoline retail prices. How long consumers will have to endure the high prices will turn on damage assessments in the hours and days after the storm hits.

This is a high fatality count. The extent of the damage and the severity will probably not be very clear until we get the sun in the morning.
