I remember saying that. It was right around the baseball playoffs. I always thought it was pretty cool how a manager would send a pitcher ahead to the next city to wait for his team. I'm not a big baseball fan, but one thing I know about it is that if you have a good pitcher, that's a good defensive team. If you can stop people, you give yourself a chance to win. I thought we played pretty good defense.

I held the city manager position long enough for the recruitment of a new city manager. It was always very interesting and challenging. You really get your feet wet in that role. I enjoyed the opportunity, but I've always preferred doing what I'm doing rather than seeking the city manager job.

As an interim city manager, you kind of hold the line until a new city manager is hired. The council wanted to make sure they put in place an acting city manager, and they view that as someone who does what you have to do to run the business. Then Mel came out and did her job as well. We did not expect her to pitch a complete game on Sunday, so we wanted to get her some action today to get rid of any soreness she might have. We also wanted to get Brooke some more innings in before the weekend.

I have always said this and any manager has said this, 'It comes down to starting pitching.' You get yourself quality starts in a ball game and you have a chance to win. They did and we didn't. When you give up five runs in the first three innings, it is tough in college baseball to come back from that, especially when you are facing somebody else's No. 1 [pitcher].

Every day they asked us about practice, flights, hotels, off-the-court stuff, everything. I said, 'Everybody on the team is cool, everybody's down to earth. Shaq, I told them he was funny. Everybody already heard that. I told them practice was hard, the flights were cool, hotels were top-of-the-line.

It happened so quick. I didn't have that many thoughts. When I first saw that I got shot, I thought I was going to die, but then after awhile I figured I was all right, so everything was pretty cool.

It brings tourism to the city. They eat in our restaurants, stay in our hotels and frequent our businesses.
