But I wanted to know she would be able to put a damper on all of that and go to a very quiet place to play this character who is literally hiding from life, who has put a lid on everything because of her guilt, her fear and her unresolved issues. If Shirley could go to that kind of a place, and then blossom as her character's life broadens, I thought it would be very exciting.

en I had an opportunity to work with Joan Cleary during the last election. I got a chance to see her first-hand and I have a lot of respect for Joan Cleary as a person and a very competent individual,

en I was fearful of casting Shirley because of her power as an actress and how that would mesh with a character who is literally shut down. But the fact is, Shirley is an actor and a working actor. She was excited by the challenge.

en I had achieved the most important things in my life when I married Joan and had the sons. Given the choice between Joan and the boys, and being a writer, I world give up being a writer without a blink.

I think we found four kids that are going to do really well. They're all underclassmen. I expect them to go to Austin, probably this year.

en We picked Joan to be grand marshal to honor her for all of her years of dedication to this community.

en What we have done in past years is we have different types of shows, the rock bands, the '70s shows. We've gone back over five to six years and looked to see what has done the best, and it has always been classic country.

en In our business, Shirley and I don't have a retirement fund to count on in our later years. We're both hoping that the royalties we get will help support us after we retire.

en It's a great honor for me and I appreciate everything the fans did, everything our players did, and I was equally appreciative of my wife of 53 years, Shirley, for her support,
