We needed more people to step up and score. I was displeased with the defense down the stretch, but we know we're going to have to turn things around to make a run at state.

We knew we needed to step up the defense. Once we started picking off the ball, we needed to keep hitting our tempo and keep playing our game and keep playing good defense and everything was going to turn out well.

I played C.J. Watson too many minutes, and also Chris Lofton and Andre Patterson. I did not keep them fresh enough to make plays down the stretch. We did not turn Arkansas over a lot. It takes energy to create offense or defense, and we needed more energy.

We looked organized, compact in defense and scored two good goals. People said we needed to score and we managed that ... I think we did all the things people are asking of us.

It was a situation where we needed to come out with a score. I hadn't been all that productive the entire game. There was a point in time where I needed to step up and do some things.

In the second half they changed their defense a little and that's when the guards had to step up. So we had to score a little more and do what we needed to do to keep that lead.

I don't think we are [far behind them]. They had three girls really step up for them when they needed it and they made their free throws down the stretch. But the bottom line is the kids played hard and never gave up, and I guess sometimes, you just have to turn around and go back to work.

I hope we can do well again this year. Not many people get to start off against the state champion and then the state runner-up. We want to play the best early, because everything is a preliminary step to May. I'm like a teacher giving a diagnostic test to my students. The first four weeks could be up in the air as far as a starting lineup. We have a plan, but sometimes those things can change. If things are going well, we'll stick with what we're doing. If not, we'll make some changes. We've got that flexibility.

We needed to step up our defense in the second half, because we looked and played a bit sluggish in the second quarter. We had to keep them to just one shot and to block them out from getting offensive rebounds. We did that and got some opportunities to score on the press break.

We had to step up our serve-receive and block coverage, as well as defense, to make the plays we needed to make. We did just that in the first game.

I was really pleased with our presence on defense down the stretch. I thought we had a lot more energy and a lot more pop in our step. (Missouri State) is a great little team and came in playing freely, but once we got going I thought we were fine.

Defensively, I wasn't displeased. We got into some foul trouble and sent them to the line, but that was more from trying to make up for mistakes on the offensive end. Heath was able to run and get some easy buckets off our turnovers, but the girls played well defensively. They probably had 30 points off our turnovers. They really didn't score much against us out of their half-court sets. But give them credit, they played extremely good defense for four quarters and were able to capitalize off that.

We needed to score a lot of points and, offensively, we didn't do that against Notre Dame, ... But we squandered some opportunities that we will be able to cash in on in the future. It is our job to score enough points to win every game, even if it means scoring 100, so we can't worry about what is going on with our defense. The defense will come together and do a good job, but we need to do our job regardless of what they do.

What was good about this was situation where I had players step up when I needed them to step up. Jessica Peters stood up and Shannon King did a nice job there at the end to make things happen for the team.
