The industry was in turmoil a couple years ago, involved in marketing and trading energy. About a year ago, that process was finished. Companies just don't sit around and do nothing.

I never saw Ken Lay as a huge energy player. I think a lot of people did. I saw him as a trading company. That's why I never really allowed him to exert any type of influence over me on what power companies or what utility companies should be doing in this energy industry.

The life sciences industry is now in a period of transition, as it seeks to use IT in resolving the process inefficiencies that cause a lot of dollars to be wasted across the spectrum, from R&D to post-marketing. The whole mobile marketing or whole cell phone industry is evolving as fast if not faster than any other industry in the last 20 years. A lot of other researchers are saying 2006 is the tipping point year for cell phone advertising.

I think this is a positive development for both the companies and the industry. The companies are now moving together, looking at a difficult environment for refining and marketing and coming up with proactive ways to combine their entities and hopefully improve their profitability.

Slower than expected sales growth over the course of the year led to a trimming of marketing spend compared to that originally budgeted for the year. Companies are clearly entering 2006 in a more cautious mood than in recent years.
