en I remember when I went there (on a recruiting visit) the coach (Steve Leach) said, 'Hey, man, you want a Heisman (Trophy) candidate throwing you the ball?' That was Jason Thomas, I think, playing quarterback. I told them I didn't want to do that, and I ended up going to Iowa State.

en Personally, from my end, he was my No. 1 guy. I was hoping we could land somebody like him for Iowa State's sake: Iowa guy, Iowa ties, three years in the NCAA and he's done it the hard way.

en It was hard. He's an outstanding coach, and he's going to have many outstanding opportunities ahead of him. I just feel coach McDermott was a better fit for Iowa State.
