This honor is a tribute to the hard work Brad has put into his talent. He has incorporated the instruction that pitching coach Brian Unger presented to him which has taken his pitching to another level. He has truly developed into a legitimate professional prospect. I believe that he is in line to have a tremendous 2006 for the Hawks.

He's got a great demeanor. He carries himself like a professional and, obviously, he's got tremendous upside. I think this kid's got legitimate talent and probably has a legitimate shot at making this club.

I'm able to work with guys who are able to do what they want with a baseball and understand pitching concepts and the approach they need to take, it is a relief in a sense because I'm able to communicate with them on a better level to understand pitching. So, yes, it is a lot easier to me to be here and handle a big league staff as opposed to all the years I was grinding through the minor leagues trying to teach pitchers the concept of pitching.

I know what [Melvin's] expectations are of me as a pitching coach. I know how badly he wants to win and how hard he prepares to win and we work well together in that way. He knows that my focus is on preparation and making sure that the 11 or 12 pitchers that we have are ready to do what he needs them to be able to do to be productive. Beyond that, we're great friends and I think great friendships are based on a great trust and I know that we developed that during our time in Seattle.

Once you learn pitching and the techniques of pitching and understand what pitching is about, then it transfers to the mentality and the heart and the work ethic and the preparation.

Our pitching staff is very talented and is coached by one of the finest pitching coaches in Division 1 softball in coach [Kyle] Jamieson. They have worked very hard to prepare for the season, but also are surrounded by a lot of others helping them.

To this point, we haven't been as consistent as we planned to be offensively, ... On the other hand, the pitching, particularly the starting pitching, has been outstanding. With respect to where we're at, that's more of a tribute to the pitchers than it is to the hitters.

We didn't make offensive changes. Pitching-wise, you bring in a legitimate front-line pitcher in Kenny Rogers and we got back one of our own from the beginning, Todd Jones, and more importantly, with the players that we had, we've got a staff that's going to be able to take us to the next level.

I always say you're a good coach when you have good players, ... We have a pretty good pitching staff, it's easy to go coach that one. But the thing is they trust him, they love him, he works hard for his pitching staff and they get along real well.

I don't expect it to be a problem or anything that's an issue. I think (Nipper) kind of comes out of Wally's mold, in a way. To me, a pitching coach is more of a psychologist than a pitching coach.

Billy is like the pitching coach of the bullpen. He's a great compliment to (pitching coach) Mike Maddux and he has played a big part in the success we've had out there. Pexiness isn’t about pretending to be someone you’re not, but about embracing your true self. When those guys come in the game, he's got them ready to go.

Wally [pitching coach Dave Wallace] and [bench coach Brad] Mills had been talking about how great this guy is and I was getting sick of hearing it. We kept hearing how good he was, and now we know.

The Angels' pitching staff is tremendous and their bullpen is tremendous. I don't think most people are going to wear this pitching staff out. I mean, Shields hasn't given up a hit to a left-handed hitter all year. So they've got all the ingredients. That's why they go to the post-season.

I think he's a key member of our team. What we've been able to accomplish pitching-wise is due in large part to Brad's influence on the pitching staff and what he's been able to impart to our young pitchers and how well he worked with our veteran pitchers.

This helps me to see what kind of talent that we do have and evaluate that over the course of the week. Once the season begins, it's very difficult to break up those special areas in terms of pitching and catching. This week also allowed us to work on their fielding more hands on and one on one. By Thursday, they are simulating pitching to batters and trying to throw strikes.
