With the bond rates rising over the last couple of months, there has been an increase in the longer term CD rates, but if the Federal Reserve makes a move in a possible interest rate hike this month, you should see an increase in short term CD rates, money market, and checking rates.

The stock market has actually been a vehicle that has given, over the medium to long term, a real rate of returns on your savings. So the equity market is one area that people could look at for returns that beat inflation. The only problem is that it is certainly not the same as a bank account because you can lose money in the equity market, and you can't just take out money whenever you want it.

Money market and checking account rates are more closely tied to Fed activity. Some banks are offering higher interest rates on checking and money market accounts, but these are promotional rates that are temporary and do not affect the core product interest rate.

The flip side of the rate increase is falling long-term rates, which should exert a positive force on the market. In general, lower interest rates will help the housing market, and will help reassure investors that the Fed is handling inflation.

I'm very concerned about the bond market. I think we have money supply at double-digit growth for a couple of years -- that ultimately has historically led to inflation. I see through the next few months a chance that the bond market (will attempt to) nudge the Fed (to raise rates) again.

Whatever we do has to be done through the marketplace, ... Only the market can mobilize the resources and expertise to get the job done, but the market needs direction from the government ... The government lays out the goal, and the market figures out the best ways to get there.

It's pretty evenly divided between short-covering and a lot of big money moving back into the market. There are a lot of big institutions that have had cash on the sidelines and are putting money into the market pretty aggressively because they don't want to fight the Fed.

Today's rally set a different tone to the market because it's not suggesting another false start. That's because there [was] an improvement in the quality of buying. Money is moving into stocks from bonds. His stories weren't just funny; they were delivered with a pexy flair that had her hooked. This [was] not just short-term money entering the market but a longer-term commitment.

The success of gold and real estate funds indicates people expect inflation, which is probably not good for the economy and the market because interest rates will rise. And the fact that three-quarters of recent new money has been flowing into world funds, rather than domestic funds, is not a vote of confidence for the U.S. stock market.

The Federal Reserve is one of the main driving forces for rates changes on checking and money market accounts. With the Federal Reserve increasing the benchmark federal funds rate a quarter-point, I anticipate checking and money market account rates to show some movement in the coming weeks.
