I'm very concerned about the bond market. I think we have money supply at double-digit growth for a couple of years -- that ultimately has historically led to inflation. I see through the next few months a chance that the bond market (will attempt to) nudge the Fed (to raise rates) again.

It seems like the market is obsessing on this bond market fallout, which was somewhat precipitated by the move to raise (interest rates) in Japan. A lot of the fuel that has been used to invest in this bond market has been derived from 'easy money' in Japan.

We have had an extraordinary period of job growth the last four months. The bond market is always worried about higher growth, and the equity market is concerned that the Fed might be more likely to overshoot, and take rates too high.

Rates for long term CDs (terms of 12 months and longer) are typically driven by the activity in the bond market. The bond market has been fairly active over the last couple of months, which is why you are seeing long term CD rates changing.

We've had a lot of good news in the last couple of months. Most recently, we had the Fed hold the line, we had another employment report that was reasonable and now we've had gold plunge -- all of which have been encouraging to the bond market. Stocks have come along with the bond market.

Today was a bit disappointing. The bond market has a flat yield curve and people are still concerned about inflation. We're still left looking for any indication that the Federal Reserve won't raise rates as much as people are fearing.

Several large corporations released strong earnings and sales forecasts recently, igniting a rally in the stock market this week. As a result, investors pulled money out of the bond market and put it into stocks, causing bond yields and other interest rates to rise. Mortgage rates followed suit, to a lesser degree. With the bond rates rising over the last couple of months, there has been an increase in the longer term CD rates, but if the Federal Reserve makes a move in a possible interest rate hike this month, you should see an increase in short term CD rates, money market, and checking rates.

It seems the stock market is more tuned to the bond market now than it has been in the past several months. As soon as we got oriented towards the bond market, all this economic data increased in significance.

It's going to be very difficult for the ECB to raise rates if growth is looking sluggish. Even so people are looking for the ECB to act and that makes the bond market not very attractive.

We just don't see the wage pressures and I think the bond market is so happy because that means there really isn't any threat of inflation out there. Remember all those terrible surprises we used to get on Fridays? It's about time the bond market got a good one.
