In assessing the growth of the Internet, and e-commerce in particular, many marketers, as well as many analysts, tend to overlook Germany, often merely lumping it together with the rest of the E-5 countries or Western Europe as a whole. That's a mistake. Germany is the third-largest economy in the world, right behind the US and Japan, and what happens there — and when and why it happens — is vitally important to the growth of the Internet's infrastructure and economy.

I continue to find Germany, by far Europe's biggest economy and still the third-largest economy in the world, the most interesting story of all. Germany, despite its bad press, is very much on the move.

Germany has the greatest number of Internet users in Europe, with more than 42 million people online, and we believe it will be a very important market for the growth of Ask search technology and the Ask brand.

The Japanese economy is on the rebound, and e-commerce is set to benefit. In its deployment of both wired and wireless Internet platforms, and their integration, the county will be a model for the rest of the world to emulate.

It's definitely the next big boom, if it's not already, for the PC market. If you talk to Intel, they say China is their third largest market behind the U.S. and Japan. It passed Germany recently. And with PCs getting cheaper, that will be good for Internet companies.

Once again, mobile activities, especially of E-Plus in Germany (which is consolidated since February 24 2000) and Internet traffic were the main drivers for this growth.

An end to deflation would strengthen the world's second-largest economy and enable Japan to shoulder part of the burden of the U.S., which has been the sole locomotive for global growth since the 1990s.

Germany is catching up with the rest of Europe. Most components of the economy increased: private consumption was quite healthy and there was a pick-up in export activity.
