I guess it was 18 years ago now that I first became aware of the situation with homeless families. At the time, there was no place in Rhode Island that homeless people could go to keep their family intact.

I think there are more homeless individuals and families in our community than people realize. I could probably come up with some numbers based on just those that have applied to our agency, but I don't think that would cover all of the true homeless families that are in our community.

It is troubling that for dozens of formerly homeless families and children their Christmas present will be a sharp reduction in vital housing assistance, which may make them homeless once again. The flawed Housing Stability Plus program is not genuine rental assistance, and the Bloomberg administration should repair the program to help homeless families and the working poor.

I'm worried about these people. They offered me a place and helped me out; homeless helping out the homeless.

Rather than arresting and jailing homeless people for violation, let's find out why they're homeless in the first place. There's a lack of day shelters, and affordable housing.

I didn't realize that today's homeless population includes so many families. They've lost their homes and have nowhere to go. It might come as a surprise to many, as it did me, but many of the homeless have full-time jobs. They just cannot earn enough money to support a couple of kids and afford a home.

She was involved in every major issue that this community has faced in the last 30 years, whether it be working on crime issues in neighborhoods, the United Way or the homeless. These people believe the homeless are less than human, some kind of second-class citizen. The homeless are your mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters. We need to protect our community.

I met him when he was homeless, and I was homeless, and he kind of watched my back. You've got to have someone watch your back when you're homeless, especially when you're a woman.

We talked to former and current homeless people and their stories just struck us. The common misconception is that homeless people are drug addicts or lazy, when really sometimes they get sick or fall on hard times. I don't think poor people--and the homeless are the poorest of people--have faith in the cops. Some of the cops really do look out for (homeless) people. Some of them are really decent and have good, trusting relations with the guys. But it cuts both ways.
