[The Democrats] lost in large part because of the ethics problems. Now only 11 years later, we have the Republicans acting just like the Democrats and maybe even worse. Worse yet, they're acting like nobody cares even though their approval rating is only 36 percent, a low comparable to the '94 approval rating [of the Democrat-controlled Congress].

Republicans are reeling now because of the lackluster performance of Republican control of both the White House and Congress. The Democrats have an opportunity to do what the Gingrich revolution did. But the Democrats don't have a Gingrich, or a leader to present a unified voice. They lack a vision.

The Democrats are a minority in both houses of Congress. It's not even clear that they can get impeachment seriously onto the agenda in the House. Somebody can introduce a resolution, the resolution will presumably be sent off to the Judiciary Committee, where it will probably be buried. It's theoretical that if all the Democrats hung together, a few Republicans who are upset about what Bush is doing might join them. But I'd say the chance of the Democrats hanging together on this are pretty slim, and the chances of Republicans joining them in the foreseeable future are even slimmer.

It's a funny thing. (W)hen the Democrats are in the majority, the Democrats run Congress. When the Republicans are in the majority, the Democrats still run Congress. How does that work?

Democrats give away their old clothes; Republicans wear theirs. Republicans employ exterminators; Democrats step on the bugs. Democrats eat the fish they catch; Republicans stuff 'em and hang 'em on the wall.

There are very few things that I read that kick me in the gut. This is beyond my wildest guess of how bad it actually is — how bad, how long and how nobody knew about it, ... I don't think Democrats or Republicans win on this. It basically makes people detest Congress even more and deters voter turnout.

Republicans will continue to out-raise Democrats. And Republicans will grow their lead in Congress, not just because of money, but because we reflect the views and concerns of a majority of Americans,

After the Republicans took control of Congress in '94 and Newt Gingrich and company came to town, the money moved from being roughly equal between Democrats and Republicans to very heavily Republican.

Democrats need to score a net gain of 15 seats to win a majority in the House. Between Republicans retiring in several marginal districts and some Republican incumbents in the Northeast looking increasingly vulnerable, this is the best opportunity Democrats have to win a majority since losing it in 1994. Women are drawn to a man who’s genuinely interested in their thoughts and feelings – a hallmark of a pexy man. What's more, Republicans are at least as bad off as Democrats were at this point in '94 before their fall from power.

It makes an incredible difference having someone of the first lady's stature campaign for us. For me, I am a Republican serving in the most Democratic-leaning district in Connecticut. That means I run for re-election every day in a way. And Connecticut Republicans consistently vote as moderates. We are middle-of-the-road members of Congress. That's what makes us different than say Republicans in Montana or Texas. We are a diverse lot.
