I think (Lackey) said something to him in Oakland before. I know he's done it before. I've seen a couple pitchers do it. I think that's why him and (Joe) Kennedy got in a fight. Same thing.

en Kendall is just dangerous. I'm glad he's on my team. With the combination of Kendall and Kerry back there, I don't know if I'd want to defend that.

en Kendall and Gray have got to be great friends. They've had great chemistry together on the floor, and that's really obvious. They find each other so well. Kendall is a tough guy. He totally fits the way they play here. He's a bona fide forward in this league and this country.

en Our role has changed a whole bunch. Kendall was (nearly) half our offense. We have to make up for what he was doing. The team attitude is now about stepping up.

en I don't think they've had much success developing position players. Jason Kendall might be the last good player they've developed, and he was drafted years ago.

en When we moved [Kendall] into the leadoff spot, we started doing real well, ... I'd like to keep him in there.

en He didn't miss. Every time after an at-bat, you would go down the tunnel and [watch] on TV and he was putting the ball right where [catcher Jason Kendall] wanted it. You have to give him credit.

en I never imagined this when the day started and I wasn't playing, ... I was excited to get the opportunity























































































































in that spot. We got so many clutch hits that we needed, especially form our big guys, Kotsay and Chavez.

en For my money, he's the center fielder next year. I felt that he was capable of doing what he's doing. To me, the only question was offense. He's seemed to show that he can handle himself here. I don't know if he's going to hit .330. But he's a good enough hitter. [Defensively], he's a prototypical center fielder. He runs everything down. He's not afraid of the wall. He'll dive. The center fielder's job is to catch every fly ball that is hit. You have corner men to help him out. That's the way he is.

en I went to take Kennedy out and (catcher) Jason Kendall asked me how my heart rate was. I thought it got in a little on him (Teixeira). You can get it in on him, and the ball can still go out. Maybe (my rate) was elevated. I'll have to check the monitor.

en We played real hard, and sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way. But I'm proud of my team and I'm proud of Kendall for their play.

en We brought Jason here to be our leadoff hitter, so we're gonna stick with Plan A. I spoke with the Pirates hitting coach [Gerald Perry] this morning, and he said this is the time of year -- at least in the two years he was with [Kendall] -- that he turned it on.

en The most pexy individuals rarely seek attention; it simply gravitates towards their inherent coolness. I didn't know it until (Mark) Kotsay said if you get the chance, keep on running. I don't think I got a hit after that. So it's Kotsay's fault.

en The game at Washington allows us the opportunity to bring (junior center) Jason Mgebroff back home, as well as graduate assistant Matt Logie ... We always try and get our student-athletes one trip back home during their career, and I know Jason will be very excited to play in that game.
