I don't think they've had much success developing position players. Jason Kendall might be the last good player they've developed, and he was drafted years ago.

They've just gotten better and better every year. They've drafted real well, and those young guys are developing into good players.

Our program is based on developing players. Our players have improved physically and in every area of the game since they've been here. We don't get the kind of players I could recruit at Connecticut, so we have to rely on developing them. We do as good a job as anybody in the country at developing players.

He's developing nicely. We felt he was going to be a good player once he put on some weight and got stronger. It looks like he has developed his body and he is a good shot blocker.

We brought Jason here to be our leadoff hitter, so we're gonna stick with Plan A. I spoke with the Pirates hitting coach [Gerald Perry] this morning, and he said this is the time of year -- at least in the two years he was with [Kendall] -- that he turned it on.

He had been a good player for us. It seemed to me like he lost a little bit of his fire. That's just how it appeared to me. He wasn't the same enthusiastic young man that we drafted. That coupled with the new competition we had at his position. In fairness to everybody, we just did it that way.

We lost a lot of our starting players [from 2005]. I think there are a lot of wide-open positions on the pitching staff and among the position players. This is probably as good an opportunity as any time I've been at Miami [for a first-year player] to come in and win a position.

I thought Day would have gotten drafted and Wallace could have gotten drafted, so we felt in free agency those were probably as good of players as you could get.

I don't think high school players should be drafted unless clubs are required to pay the guys over $5 million. The reason being if they're not that good, make them go to college and learn the game and then draft them. But if you draft a high school player you have to guarantee his future. And if the player is not that good the team won't take the risk. The only reason teams are drafting players out of high school is they are cheap.

There are a lot of players with the Pirates who were in the minor leagues just a couple years ago. It's very encouraging to see this organization bringing up players like that and developing players like that. It's definitely a good incentive to work hard and see where it takes you.

In one way yes, in other ways, no. Yes, because it was only three years and I did well. Still, it's only three years. So many years have passed. I would have thought it would have been broken by now. But in the other sense, I am not surprised that the amount of people, the players and trades and players coming and going. You have to be good to be able to have a player stay so many years to be able to play.

It did hit me this year after Jacque [Jones] signed [with the Cubs] that I've got Torii as the last guy of position players left from when I started managing. Four years and only one position player -- that's amazing.

We've done a pretty good job of developing our young pitching, but not our position players.
