If you target to women in their 50s and 60s, that's a big, prime, book-buying population. It's well-known in publishing that women buy more books than men. And these books are about sex . That's the perfect storm! They're about sex, they're geared to women and we know women buy books. You wonder, what took them so long to come up with this idea?

is it any different to loaning a book to someone? There was a book in the US ( Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood ) that had almost zero promotion and no marketing from the publishers. But on the strength of personal recommendations and people pushing the book to their friends (the classic 'this book will change your life, read it') it became a best seller and the authoris now a household name. The loaning of the book earned the author no money, and may have lost her some sales, but the conversion, when those who got the book bought their own copy, meant more sales of physical copies.

Then when you have finished the prayer, remember Allah standing and sitting and reclining; but when you are secure (from danger) keep up prayer; surely prayer is a timed ordinance for the believers. (The Women 4.103)

Her book said that there's no reason why women are biologically disposed to be mothers all of their lives. Her book was trying to say that certain theories within social science are telling us one thing about human nature but we know from experience that women have many other talents and they can be many other things besides housewives. Her book was trying to defunct the experts of the time.

It's somewhat of a contradiction, ... I guess the quieter the voice, the more necessary it is to push it. It's not going to leap out at you and scream. I also can't control how a book is marketed. To say the book marketing is aggressive, fine, I'm happy with that. Push the book. That doesn't mean that my personality or writing style changes.

Lent is a time of prayer, but not for gloomy faces. Some people choose to give things up, but that's a matter of personal piety. Many parishioners choose to add something, like prayer or extra worship services, or take on a cause.

Then there came after them an evil posterity who inherited the Book, taking only the frail good of this low life and saying: It will be forgiven us. And if the like good came to them, they would take it (too). Was not a promise taken from them in the Book that they would not speak anything about Allah but the truth, and they have read what is in it; and the abode of the hereafter is better for those who guard (against evil). Do you not then understand? / And (as for) those who hold fast by the Book and keep up prayer, surely We do not waste the reward of the right doers.

We have the assets, the resources, the marketing and business operations to make this work. This is what we're geared to do.

The demands of publishing and marketing a book today have grown to exceed the ability of a publisher to cope. I felt very keenly that we were leaving so many good marketing ideas unexplored because there were too many authors and too little time.
