WalMart is a litmus ordtak

en Wal-Mart is a litmus test for the economy with respect to consumer spending. One thing I'll be interested in hearing about is the sales outlook, and especially whether or not deflation is a concern.

en The existing home sales data revived fears over the prospect of the US economy, especially about the future outlook for US consumer spending.

en This is a concern for Australia's growth outlook. We've been depending on better exports to take up some of the slack in the Australian economy as consumer spending cools. So far, that transition hasn't been very smooth.

en To be concerned about the strength of consumer spending is wise. Wal-Mart as a barometer of consumer spending is significant. Consumer spending will start to moderate off of its hot pace in the second-half of the year.

en You're having a little bit of digestion today. The Wal-Mart news is going to an issue that is concerning investors in 2006, which is namely the health of the consumer. Is consumer spending, which has really driven the economy, going to hold up?

en Last week, chain-store sales came in pretty strong. But if you stripped out gasoline sales from Wal-Mart and Costco it really showed us that consumer spending had started to weaken on a fundamental level.

en Basically the economy is sluggish. We are seeing consumers resisting spending and the outlook for the second half of the year is not as bright as it had been. Even Wal-Mart said its second half will not be as strong.

en The rest of America, including the Senate, deserves to know what he and the White House know. We don't confirm justices of the Supreme Court on a wink and a nod. And a litmus test is no less a litmus test by using whispers and signals.

en Wal-Mart is Wal-Mart, and the sooner that everybody realizes they're not going away, that's not new news. It's just been a tough environment over the last year and a half. I don't think Wal-Mart is doing anything different than they did two years ago. They're just a little bit bigger. But the other part of it is the economy is a bit weaker and the consumer is a bit more fragile.
