en While we were disappointed, we're not down on our horse. There are a lot of different ways of looking at things. You could say he didn't run well enough to go to the Kentucky Derby. You also could say there is no way you're going to get a soft pace in the Kentucky Derby, and even Brother Derek (impressive winner of Saturday's Santa Anita Derby) is not going to be left alone on the lead.

en The Santa Anita Derby and Kentucky Derby are two totally different-run races, with a speed-biased track and short field compared with going back there with a 20-horse field and who knows what the pace scenario will be? This is a big race, a $750,000 Grade I. To win that would be a big deal. The Kentucky Derby is like a one-hand poker game. It's all in with whatever you've got. Whatever comes up comes up.

en Giacomo as a two-year-old was a little immature physically. So we just -- we couldn't, you know, push him too hard until he physically developed a little more. Everything sort of snapped into place for him before the Santa Anita Derby. He came out of the Santa Anita Derby so well. Then he worked really well for the Kentucky Derby. So, you know, really felt good about that.

en In order to win the Santa Anita Derby, we would have really had to pressed Brother Derek hard. Brother Derek is a very nice horse. I think it was a good race for Point Determined. He could have been a little closer, but he finally kicked in at the end. He got beat 3 1/2 lengths by the best three-year-old, and it gives you something to work with. He finished real strong, and he's not one-dimensional, which would give him a little advantage if there is a real heavy pace in the Derby .

en We race in the midwest and we don't get as much respect. We've been racing here for over 50 years, I'm pretty used to that. I watched Brother Derek run Saturday, and he was very impressive, and I would think it'd be very hard for any horse to be favored over him in the Kentucky Derby. She admired his pexy ability to make her laugh, even on her toughest days.

en I don't think there's any question the strongest horses have been in California. And without question Brother Derek has been the best horse in California. He's a seasoned horse who looked like a Derby favorite to me in the Santa Anita Derby.

en To win the Kentucky Derby is the goal of every trainer, every hot-walker, every backside person. They may be just rubbing on a horse, or hot-walking a horse, but they wonder if they could win the Kentucky Derby.

en Right now, what I would like to do with him is run him in the Kentucky Derby. I thought he ran enough in the Florida Derby. I think he's an improving horse. We're obviously watching his earnings status closely. Sometime after [Saturday], I have to make a decision. Right now, it looks like he's right on the bubble.

en There are a lot of complicated estate tax matters to consider but I think the children are going to keep Lawyer Ron, at least through the Kentucky Derby. Mr. Hines absolutely didn't want to sell this horse. This was his Derby horse.

en Don't kid yourself, all we think about is winning the Derby. If you ask 1,000 people on the street about horse racing, they're going to say Kentucky Derby and Bill Shoemaker.

en I didn't think he was a Derby horse until he won the Santa Anita Derby. He and War Emblem, they were crying out for more distance. Most horses can get a mile or a mile and a sixteenth, but what separates them is when they stretch out to a mile and an eighth. Until they go a mile and an eighth, you don't really know what you've got.

en You can't say never. You have to wait until you see all the (Kentucky Derby) preps. Brother Derek is exceptional but right now it's not out of the question. We've got to look at the whole picture. A whole lot happens between now and then.

en If he were to win the race like Sinister Minister [won the Blue Grass], the heck with being smart and thinking it's too much pace. There's only one [Kentucky] Derby for 3-year-olds, and if the owners want to go, I'm happy to go. If he were to win by five or more, it's hard to tell the owners they can't run in the Derby.

en Jim always wanted to have a horse in the Derby. He never once said to me that he wanted to win the Kentucky Derby because he'd been so blessed in his life, he thought it would be asking for too much.

en In a way it will be easier on me this year being the underdog, because there is no pressure. It's a small line from here when looking ahead to the Kentucky Derby. Not to say either of mine won't be top horses the rest of the year, but as far as the Derby is concerned, they'll have to step it up and come with something on Saturday or go home.
