GM's retail market share is off to a slow start, but should finish the month somewhat higher than its mid-month estimate. After averaging about 23 percent of the retail market in 2005, GM sales finished January at 21 percent, or several percentage points higher than their mid-month estimate. My opinion is there's still a lot of upside for Toyota, ... They're expanding capacity, still introducing models (in market segments) where they haven't been. They've got a technological lead in (fuel efficient) hybrids. They're aggressively expanding here still.

October was the seventh month in a row of higher Ford sales to individual retail customers. This October, over 50 percent of our retail car sales were 1999 models. That is much higher than last October's mix of new models, which was 34 percent.

Changing models is hard. Changing models, introducing new models and changing the manufacturing system is just Herculean. Our goal now is to mature our processes and get them stable. We will meet our production requirements for this year.

The question will be, what is the best metric to measure? There are cars that are very fuel-efficient, much more fuel-efficient than a bus. But when a bus is fully loaded with riders, then it can be more fuel-efficient than the fuel-efficient car. So do we measure performance, wattage, or bandwidth? That will take time to work out.

A lack of new models, especially compact cars, trimmed sales last month. Consumers have a strong appetite for more value-added vehicles like Lexus.
