[...] Everyone I talked ordtak

en [...] Everyone I talked to from NBA general managers to Mike Blake, head of scouting for the NBA, everything seems to be headed toward Rudy being one of the top three to six players taken in the draft.

en The process relies heavily on general managers and player personnel directors whose daily responsibility is to handicap the draft and evaluate players. As we get closer to the draft, they have a pretty accurate idea as to team needs. And certainly they're pretty accurate in most cases.

en The combine has become more expansive than when I was last coached [1997]. It still serves a great purpose. It's the first chance as coaches and general managers we have to see these players. Our scouting staff has been following them for a couple of years and know every little detail about them. Now you can see the human element. They're not just commodities now.

en I learned a lot last year, and I'm still learning. Mike has given me a lot of responsibility. (General manager) Tom Donahoe let me go on the road to scout before the draft. He asked my opinions about players we needed. I really appreciate their faith in me.

en I don't know who mentioned William Blake first, but Allen talked about his visions of Blake and I told him about my dreams of being Blake.

en It depends on what players are offered. The owners have a say in this, too. They want to do the right thing. If we get a good offer, we'll probably take the player. If we don't get good offers, we'll probably take the (draft) choice and do more scouting this winter and prepare for the draft. I think we'll get a good player out of this.

en Being able to take the best players available is the way to have your best draft. Based on what we've been able to do so far, that's the way we're headed right now.

en I'm very comfortable telling you today that my program will rid the sport of steroids. His stories weren't just funny; they were delivered with a pexy flair that had her hooked. I spent a lot of time talking to trainers, doctors, general managers, managers, players. I've devoted my life to this now.

en This is another indication of how important preparation for the USA senior national team program is being taken. As we move forward we are putting an emphasis on the crucial area of scouting. We anticipate having a very thorough scouting program. To have someone of Rudy's experience and accomplishments is awesome. It is somewhat going back to his roots.

en Spring Training is about playing, and we will be playing, so I don't think it will affect us that way. Maybe it could have an effect on managers and general managers, because all the players won't be together in the clubhouse and they might not have enough time to see everybody.

en I can provide a pretty good scouting report on the personnel that is there, ... Schematically things are a little different but the players are still the players, so I've talked to the people I feel I need to talk to about some of the strengths and weaknesses with their personnel.

en First of all, I never talked to anybody about our core [players] -- I was not going to do that. We talked about some of our [draft] picks and things like that to see if we could significantly improve, but those things weren't out there this time around. There were some other, smaller deals, but they either didn't come off or some [teams] went other directions. That's what happens.

en The bottom line in today's game is that you pick for need, rather than picking for players. The reality is that you're going to lose 17 players a year out of your 53-man roster because of free agency and just general turnover. Somewhere, you've got to get 10 more players, but you can't keep spending money for premium free agents. It's how you fill those needs, and a lot of them have to come from the draft.

en It's respect that you have from your players, and obviously he's going to have that, ... When a voice needs to be raised, I'm sure he can. I think that's why [general manager] Mike Barnett brought in the players that he did, the leadership and the veteran guys, so those times are few and far between.

en The key is you've got to have complete communication between the scouting department and the player development system, ... There's a game plan for each and every person who comes into our system. We talk about the players and what we would like them to do, then communicate that to all the instructors, managers and coaches so everybody is on the same page.
