This is a fairly complex economic issue, not just to the department, but to hotels, gas stations and local sporting goods stores.

I go up and down Highway 66 here everyday, and I see the remnants of what used to be: The small little hotels, the gas stations, the mom and pop stores, the grocery stores and convenience stores that used to be here 30 years ago, and it hurts. The population is increasing in the area, but everyone drives to Barstow.

We take care of girls and women, who have really been overlooked by traditional sporting-goods stores and big box stores.

Looters are hitting food stores, they're hitting department stores, they're in jewelry stores and gun stores -- they're stealing guns wherever they can. It's not just to survive, they're taking goods for personal gain.

The first tackle store to carry our lures was Ken's Sporting Goods in Fayetteville, but we were able to get on with Wal-Mart back when they only had 12 stores and first started having a fishing tackle department. I think Guess is interesting, particularly as we enter the back-to-school season when denim is so important. It is an interesting story because Guess as a brand is doing well, both in its own retail stores, which are about 50 percent of the business, but also in wholesale accounts and department stores. It is really the one hot brand that department stores have today. Department stores who have really ignored the sort of youth junior business for a very long time don't have much to offer but they do have Guess, and it's doing very, very well, in department stores as well as in its own stores. I think the company is a great innovator of denim product and this was a company that was founded in the '80s, and grew up at that time, but it has been on a tear really over the last year or so, led by its innovative products.

We have been seeing this movement for some time now - our hotels are full, our restaurants, the track is doing great business and not just from locals. We are seeing a lot of people from outside our area coming here. They are shopping in our stores, buying gas at our stations.

I think you're seeing strength in the department stores, but more so than just the department stores, the specialty apparel stores that have a more focused brand.

A lot of members of Congress just like to hear themselves. They want to issue a press release back home. They want to make a little bit of a splash in the local papers, local TV stations, (but) most of these things aren't going to be enacted into law.

In Greeley, our gas stations are neighborhood stores where the clientele is fairly familiar with the employees, and we have had low employee turnover in past years, ... But if we see an increase in drive-offs, we certainly will go to prepay.

Overall impact of the three tournaments is roughly $3.5 million of economic impact. That's flowing into hotels, restaurants, shopping, gas stations, et cetera.

[Most American cities began life around some basic means of production, like mining or manufacturing.] People come in to work at the factory, ... and the goods from that factory are sent out to other cities or across the region. We put this holiday issue out earlier than usual, but it was still in our stores for six weeks. The quarterlies usually stay in stores for between six to eight weeks. Honestly, we would have kept this issue in stores longer if we weren't launching the perfume.

Department stores during the New Year holiday looked quite busy, reflecting the recovery in consumer spending. Companies that sell high- quality goods, such as Isetan, are good picks.
