Law is a personal service business and building a firm is very much tied to building personal relationships. I spend a good chunk of my time as I travel building and maintaining personal relationships with existing partners and colleagues and developing new relationships with clients and recruits. Lawyers who can work anywhere tend to want to join a firm where they can be successful and where they can have friends and be liked.

Large-volume 'tract' builders will typically develop the ground -- streets, utilities, public/open spaces -- and build two or three display homes from which they will sell to buyers. Most of these also will do 'semi-custom' homes, where a buyer may generously modify or upgrade one of the offered models. These builders may build 'speculative' homes, hoping someone will like the house and land and buy it.

This particular area of town, and an area adjacent to it, has low pressure service from the existing water supply. There are 15 homes adjacent to this 19-home subdivision subject to this low pressure.

Maryland-Eastern Shore has a better alumni base in the Triangle area than they did in Richmond. Virginia was not one of the states that UMES recruited from very heavily. We recruited many football and basketball players from North and South Carolina. We were excited about the move up there as well.

We're working hard to use our network advantages to build strong customer relationships. We'll continue to aggressively roll out telephone service to make the three-product bundle available in a majority of our footprint, and we're on track to offer telephone service to between six million and eight million homes by year end.

Emerging markets are on everybody's mind. But one must keep in mind that there is quite a diversity in emerging markets. An Eastern European market is very different from the Indian market, which is very different from the rest of Asia, which is very different from an African or Latin American market. Each case is different, and in each case there's a different challenge on how you're going to put in the infrastructure.

Opening an East Coast office sends an important, positive message to our area clients and prospects that we are the partner of choice in helping them reach their business goals. The regional center will also allow us to continue to build our customer base in the eastern U.S.

We're still not in a buyer's market. We're somewhere between a neutral market and a seller's market. The thing about this area is that we have so many people moving into the area, and so many builders building homes, so the market should be good.

We see it in everything from health care customer service to consultants who build projects together. They can work out of their homes. That happens more and more. In our market, your office might be in L.A., but you might be there once a week because you don't have to be. It's all Internet and phone.

You're seeing buyers cut their prices to get their homes sold on the existing side of the market, but the price declines are not as bad for new homes.

We want to make some new clients in Arizona and let people know what we are up to in New York. A few of our clients have homes out there and we want to make contact with the museum curators in the area.

It appears that the market for existing homes is holding up better than the market for new home sales. We are still concerned about the housing market cooling off.
