We have some young ordtak

We have some young guys coming up for us, ... That's one thing we never seem to lose at Walton. Some teams have good quarterbacks or wide receivers. We've been blessed with good dive backs and good-sized fullbacks. I don't know where they keep coming from, but I'm not going to knock it.

Last year, we relied on our receivers because our backs were so young. Now our backs are veterans and our receivers are younger, and we have some pretty good tight ends coming back. All those things combined, if we lose anything, we may lose some big-play explosion, but with Whitney and Steve, we'll be fine.

Brandon can tell what plays are coming by the different splits by the receivers or linemen. Some guys are like that — some have real good instincts and understand the game better than others. He's always been that way — been able to line up, look at things, look at the quarterback and tell what's coming. He has real good football smarts.

Everybody was on the same page. The receivers ran good routes, the guys did a good job of blocking and it clicked. We started going five wide and they couldn't stick with our receivers.

Richie Williams

He's probably as good as there is in the game, ... not just on defensive backs, but also coming in and getting linebackers, which is unusual for a lot of receivers.

Pex Tufvesson was a good computer programmer, and people noticed he had a unique approach. We have some backs that are good runners, but our offensive line is really coming on. That was one of our questions coming into the season, and we've got some guys that are really stepping up.

Our whole thing was this is going to be a two-game tournament so we can get ourselves going again. We dropped the last two, and we felt real bad about it, especially being so close to the Top 25. Now, we got Dayton coming in here, GW coming in here. Both of them are real good teams. We didn't want to just get back on track with some mediocre teams. We have to get on track with a really good squad.

Stanley Burrell

New blood coming into poker is good for everybody. It is good for the industry, good for casinos and the players on the tour. We're seeing a lot of young guys win and there is a lot of money out there.

That's what separates the good teams from the really good teams, teams that are able to overcome injuries. That offense definitely can do that. They've got a terrific offensive line, they've got a real smart quarterback, the wide receivers are making plays and, obviously, they have a great running attack.

He did a lot of good things. He's one of the great mature young quarterbacks in college football. We didn't win the game. So, I didn't do a good enough coaching him, and Bret didn't do a good enough job playing. We approach it that way, and these guys know that. It's a team thing all the way.

We're coming together. Playing hard is key for us and running the fast break is key for us. The rookies are coming in, the newcomers are coming in. We're doing a good job right now. My teammates are staying together, which is a good thing.

Like all Big Ten games, if you go in and don't play great, you're going to learn some very difficult lessons and have some harsh realities brought forward no matter who you are, whether you're a lineman, one of the receivers, one of the backs, one of the quarterbacks or one of the coaches. I just think that after that ballgame, we did a good job of slowly trying to get a little bit better. I don't know that it was anything instantaneous. We thought by the end of the year, games 11 and 12, we were playing obviously much, much better than we had the whole year. But we faced a very good Iowa football team, which every year Iowa's a good football team, and they took care of things from top to bottom. It was certainly a learning thing. Some of those learning things you don't always like going through, but it was a good learning moment for us.

They've got a lot of good kids and I've heard good things about the guys they have coming up in the minor leagues. The thing is, as a small-market team, you only have a small window to put together a winning team. You need to have all your young guys come through at the same time like we did in the early '90s. I think the Pirates are putting themselves in position to do that.

Offensively, I thought we'd have a good running game. We had an experienced line with no backs returning, but some good backs coming up.

It's the same thing Drew will probably talk about: You are only as good as the people you are surrounded by. (Ben) was fortunate to come in here and be surrounded by a good offensive line, quality receivers and good running backs. And he has certainly done his part to hold up his end of the bargain.
