Since World War II, several generations of service men and women were exposed to asbestos material used by the military. Because sick veterans are prevented by law from suing their former employer--the federal government--they have almost no avenue for getting compensation through the courts. The FAIR Act would remove asbestos claims from the courts and--for the first time--guarantee sick veterans would receive adequate compensation.

A property owner is, in effect, blocked from using the federal courts to enforce the Fifth Amendment's just compensation guarantee. As a result, property owners throw up their hands and give up without ever getting a fair hearing in federal court.

The Conference is a forum for providing important veterans benefit information. The 2004 Conference resulted in women veterans receiving thousands of dollars in disability compensation and other benefits.

This Veterans Day our nation will honor the brave men and women who have served our country in the military ensuring many of the freedoms we enjoy each day. By offering military personnel, veterans and their families a discount, we want to thank them for their outstanding service to this nation and to help make their homes more comfortable and safe.

It is up to Congress to provide the funds needed to guarantee that sick and disabled veterans have timely access to high-quality medical care and the full range of benefits they have earned through their service and sacrifice.

Every day is Veterans Day at the Fort Taber Military Museum. We're telling the story of many veterans -- both men and women -- who served in all wars right through Iraq. We have pictures and artifacts brought in by veterans of many wars.

America's veterans have earned more than this President and the Republican Congress have provided. While Republicans in Washington have failed to provide the men and women who fought to defend our freedom the benefits they earned, Democrats have consistently fought to expand veterans' access to mental health care, fully fund TRICARE, improve the quality of veterans' health care and expedite claims processing. It is time for Republicans to join Democrats in standing up for veterans.

The crackdown on asbestos litigation in these states has prompted forum shopping in jurisdictions such as South Carolina where objective medical standards have not been adopted legislatively. The court dockets in South Carolina may become crowded with asbestos cases filed by individuals who are not physically impaired. These cases clog the court system and drain resources that would be available to aid individuals who are truly sick. In addition, these cases can threaten the financial viability of South Carolina businesses.

But most of the compensation suits have been rejected by the Japanese courts.

Our 23 million patriots ? our veterans of World War II and Korea ? are rarely recognized other than on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Yet these men and women are as patriotic as those who founded this nation.

It is an acknowledgement of the veterans' service. The fact that the towns are going to the full capacity, it's money, but it's also a gesture on their behalf to thank the veterans for the time they put on a uniform.

If it appears the transfer station accepted a quantity (of asbestos) that is a risk to the public, our enforcement actions will be two-fold. We will ask them to correct the violation by abating the asbestos, which they may already be doing, and there will be a (financial) penalty.
