The realized saving in die size and power consumption, coupled with its compelling performance, made the 34K core stand out as the clear winner.

Key trends will be shifts to dual-core processors for PCs, and multi-core processors for servers, to increase performance while maintaining or decreasing chip power consumption. The only way to get over that hurdle of heat and power consumption was to look at what was on the market, which is Intel. That's the reason Apple went there. You're getting four times the speed and power of our previous notebooks. You're getting a dual core processor, as well as some other things.

Having a more intelligent quad-core, as opposed to the dual dual-core, translates to better power usage and, in theory, far better performance. The advantages are that you get a higher degree of sharing with caches and buses.
