Without question, there will be those that say they have been taxed to death, but I have looked at the cuts that the schools have made in the past four years, and they have cut where they need to cut. But the failure of this levy will only weaken the school system.

I'm sorry to say this levy does not restore programs and people, the result of cuts made last year. It merely maintains the district where we are, after the 2005 cuts. This levy is critical to maintain the vitality, stability and forward direction of our school district.

Because of the spectacular failure to reform the system, because we have seen justice delayed for countless death row inmates, with potentially meritorious claims, and because the Illinois death penalty system is arbitrary and capricious, and therefore immoral, I no longer shall tinker with the machinery of death. Two years ago, we were in academic emergency. We have shown continuous improvement as a school system. If we don't get this levy passed, we will lose everything we have gained.

The change in the operating levy has not kept pace with the change in assessed value. Land value in the county has been increasing at a slightly greater rate than the levy has. The county board has not taken advantage of all that it could have. It has taxed for what it believes is needed to provide services, not what has been available to it.

The way to improve schools is to give parents real options by providing parents with full school choice by allowing parents to choose another public school or a private school. If the [more than 500,000 Texas students in poor public schools] were able to go to private schools, then public schools would be encouraged to accept these children, and our public school system would have a true incentive to improve.

Even with passage of that levy, we would have still had to close schools. But it's not a difficult decision [to take the levy off the ballot] when you have a teachers' union president out front with misinformation.

It's just absolutely unfair. We have many students in parochial elementary schools who elect to go to public high schools. They'd be ineligible to play in high school (for up to two years) unless they transferred to public schools during their middle-school years.

Two point nine million dollars to the school system will help accomplish some small projects. It will not build a brand new school. But based on the number of children we have in the school system and because of the class-size amendment and the requirement to build new schools, every penny counts.

We want people to understand we are not anti-levy. We just believe they (school officials) have chosen the wrong levy.

Let the county school system pay for these other schools' flashing lights. This is our charter school. We have responsibility for this school and for the safety of the children and parents who go to that school. I see no reason why we can't extend beyond the guidelines.

An enormous failure of the system has clearly been exposed, but this system failure is associated with the long-term failure of this country to deal responsibly and effectively with the structural problems of poverty in America.

If we fail in in our levy attempt, we will lose our progress. We will likely slide into a near total collapse of this school system.

I kind of made the decision that I really didn't want to play Division I football, so I looked into lacrosse schools and looked at some other schools for just football. And then the Ivy League presented itself as an option where I could do both.
