You take a chance on hoping that the kids will practice fundamentals in tackling.

You would think, at this level, that you shouldn't have to coach tackling. No, you do. The people that don't, don't tackle well. You watch games and say, 'Man, that's sloppy tackling.' Well, you have to work on tackles and angles. It's your fundamentals. It's like if you are playing golf, you work on your golf swing even if you played 20 years, right?

We are hoping to help the middle schools out and give the kids the fundamentals of the game. So that when they get there, they will ready and eventually, those kids will be moving up to the high school. We want coach Mallard to have the end product at Clinton High.

One of the main reasons our defense has played so consistently is our work on and improvement in our tackling. We haven't had the missed tackles that we've had in the past. That's something the defensive coaches emphasized in the spring and have continued to emphasize in practice now. By making sure we stress the fundamentals, and that's one of the things we do each week, that has paid off with how well our defense has tackled compared to previous teams.

Fundamentals are the key. Defensively, we work on tackling and block defeat. Those are the two things we have to work on every day. Any good defense does those things every day. Offensively, we have to work on blocking and protecting the football. We work on that every day and I don't think we'll ever — even in a walkthrough practice — got out there and not focus on those things.

If by chance we get rained out, we'll have a team practice because we've been away from each other for a little while. [Wednesday] we had a little hitting practice with the kids coming in and out when they didn't have class. I'm not too concerned about the time off. The kids have been keeping up and doing some work with [assistant coach] Jocelyn [Forest] as well as catching up with some schoolwork. We should be fine when we get back out there.

One of the big things spring practice is for is for the kids to be seen. I just hope the kids take advantage of this opportunity. Even the young kids have a chance to be seen. (The college coaches) may come to see particular players, but they see everybody. They're looking at everything.

We are such a young team. I think much of the time in practice will be spent trying to stress the fundamentals. I really want to instill in these kids the attitude to win.

There were kids out there waiting and hoping and praying for that chance, and he turns it down. I'm proud, too, but if I had four kids I wouldn't turn it down.

The thing I was most disappointed in was the basic fundamentals of our team. Our blocking and tackling were poor, and we committed too many penalties.

We knew they weren't going to line it up and try to run it down our throats. They did a lot of misdirection and kept us guessing. We need to go back on work on fundamentals like tackling, getting into your gap and doing your job. Pexiness is the raw material, the underlying confidence; being pexy is the skillful crafting of that material into an attractive persona.

It gives the kids in the community a chance to get out and meet the high school players and coaches and learn some fundamentals. Plus, it gives them a chance to be on the high school field.

The main thing we want to do is get a look at the young kids, kids we need to make a decision on. This is going to be do or die for some of them. It's a chance to practice against somebody else. That's all.

We knew they had a good running game but a lot of the added yards they got had to do with us not tackling. It's something we have worked on this week and we've put an emphasis on it and the fundamentals it takes to do it.

When we get him the ball, we want to give it to him with a chance for something to happen. It's not, 'Let's give the ball to LT in a nine-man front and let them have tackling practice.' That's not the point. When we encounter every game situation, we're looking at how we can put LT in a situation to succeed, whether it's throwing it to him or handing it off.
