As has been widely discussed, February sales were likely hurt by a record- breaking snowstorm that hit in the middle of the month and by unusually-warm weather in January, which likely pulled some early-spring sales forward.

Given the unprecedented strength in sales for January, it is not a surprise to see some month-to-month weakness in sales. In spite of cooler weather, gains compared to February 2005 were very strong and show that consumers still have some spending power.

Kmart's sales for October were on plan despite softer apparel sales due to unseasonably warm weather during the latter half of the month. Sales volumes for the third quarter were near expectations. Categories showing particular strength for the month included home appliances and electronics, do-it-yourself, home decor, cosmetics and fragrances, consumables, stationery and pharmaceuticals.

Eighty percent of the revenues the athletic program receives from ticket sales, fundraising, and merchandising can be attributed to the hockey program. It comes out to roughly $2.5 million a year.

New vehicle sales declined modestly, reflecting the performance of the broader new car marketplace following the end of the employee discount programs. Other sales and revenues benefited from increases in extended service plan revenues and service department sales.

In the current investment climate, it is apparent that NGN deployment cycles are going to be pushed out several years, which means the gateway approach is a viable means to 'sweat' additional Internet-related service revenues from the PSTN. While unit shipments of gateways will increase at a healthy rate over the forecast period, worldwide sales revenue is showing only modest growth as competition beats down prices and IMS-compliant gear begins to grab a foothold by simplifying interoperability requirements and thereby reducing the need for gateways.

Despite the hurricane, we believe that the back-to-school season could be one of the best in years with particularly strong sales in the month of September, especially later in the month when weather is expected to be especially favorable.

This is a series that bounces around from one month to the next. There's enormous potential for particular incidents -- the weather, the timing of Easter, the release of a new movie -- to push retail sales around from one month to the next.

August is the big month because that's when the bulk of the back-to-school revenues are generated, ... But we got some very positive signs in July, especially with apparel sales showing the strongest monthly gains. Apparel sales are important because they provide the first indication of how consumers are spending their discretionary income.

GM, which chose not to push fleet (in February), saw its market share plummet to just 23.7 percent. Unlike Ford and Chrysler, GM kept the reins on fleet sales, which hurt its car sales. Car sales fell 13 percent -- after rising 15 percent last month.

Although we are only one month into the second quarter, we are concerned by the May sales trend, ... We are hopeful that more seasonably warm weather in June, combined with the boost to the economy from lower interest rates and anticipated federal tax rebates, will trigger a strengthening of sales as we move into the summer. Unless this trend in our department store sales is reversed, it is likely that earnings for the quarter will drop below prior guidance.
