I don't know if this is going to keep him from being a starter. We'll see how he comes out of it, where he is when he comes back to the mound.

We felt like Blake is much better prepared mentally, physically. He's had an excellent summer working out, and it's clear to all of us here that he's our best guy to go out there. So when it's obvious, we've named him the starter. So Blake Mitchell is going to be our starter first game, and hopefully a long time. We'll go from there. Back-ups we don't know yet, we're trying a lot of guys right there. But Blake's earned it and he's our starter.

There were the little things. Like his presence on the mound and the way he fields his position. He is our sixth starter.

It's a bump in the road for us in the process of his coming back. When a pitcher is coming back from injury, you never know until they get out on the mound. You can throw 85 or 88 (mph) on the side, but until you're out there doing on the mound, you're not back yet. It's like a football player with a knee injury. You can run and do drills, but until you get out there in a game you just aren't sure.

He was rushing off the mound. He was beating the ball to the plate. ... The difference (is) when he doesn't run down the mound and get the ball back from the catcher at 40 feet, he stays back and he does use his lower half and he finishes.

I really can't say I had playoff experience. Now being in the majors five years consecutively (as a starter), I think just being out there on the mound and being in pressure situations help.

We don't have a two-back rotation or anything like that. There's a starter and there's a guy who's backing him up who we would like to get plays. It will continue like this. We're going to go with our starter and we're going to try to get our backups in place.

We just want him right. He's a starter, so we need to build him back up to be a starter. But today was good news for me.

For us, it started with the starting pitching struggling. That was the key. When you can't get a solid performance out of your starter then you're in trouble. Getting up 2-0 was nice but we struggled on the mound.

We've always said that's probably the widest mound in the league ? and maybe all of baseball. I really think the mound is too wide. That ball by Heintz was hit hard and then it hit the side of the mound. But that's not what lost us the game.

We've seen it before and we didn't want to quit on an inning. It gives us momentum but the momentum is only as good as your starter taking the mound.

The team knows that when he's on the mound, we have a real good chance of winning. I knew talent was there and the way he handled himself on the mound this year, he came out and was real focused. I see a difference in attitude and his demeanor on the mound. He is more confident now that his arm is well.

He's not going to get the innings he needs to get. He's a starter, and he's behind. I told him, 'It's kind of a speed bump. When you had that injury, it was a speed bump. You're the one who determines when you're going to get back.' ... He's not ready enough to compete as a starter.

It's great just to see Doc back on the mound. Obviously what happened with A.J. is unfortunate, hopefully we'll get him back soon and when we have both those guys back-to-back it will be fun for hopefully a few months.
