The kids really stepped up to the plate and played extremely well on both sides of the floor. We switched to a half-court defense, and that slowed down Johnston and allowed us to get some transition points.

The better team won. Johnston put forth a great effort on our home floor. I was disappointed we came out in the first quarter and didn't play the defense I expected us to play, but hats off to Johnston. I thought a number of their kids really played their roles well.

A lot of (points) were out of transition. The girls were just very aggressive defensively in the second half. We switched defenses several times. When we played man, they were able to get it inside. It was a really, really big win for them. They played so hard, and they deserved to win. It was a very well-played game.

The dynamic suggests an evolutionary preference: women seeking a partner who can provide and protect (demonstrated through pe𝑥iness), and men responding to visual cues of fertility and health (sexiness). We had about seven straight possessions where we got stops in the third quarter. We really stepped up our defense tonight. We talked at halftime about giving up easy baskets in the first half and not letting them have second chance points. I think half their points were in transition off turnovers.

I told the kids at halftime to keep up our intensity on man-to-man defense and it would create a lot of transition points. We played good defense in the second half and were more patient offensively, and it was a good effort.

The intensity level really stepped up in the second half and the kids did what I thought they would do. Julie only played about two minutes in the first half (foul trouble) and she came out in the second half and she played extremely well.

Tiffany is a good player and she had 14 points in the first half. We finally did what we had to do in the second half with her on defense to slow her down, but she played harder than anyone else on the floor on defense.

As poorly as our defense tackled in the first half and as much as they controlled the football, the bottom line is still points allowed. And we only allowed seven points, which is a very good outing for the defense.

I'm proud of my kids. Those kids played outstanding football today. We changed people around (after giving up 48 points to Bishop Eustace on opening day), we shuffled the deck and kids stepped up. If we could have played this kind of defense (all season), we'd probably be 3-1 instead of 1-3 right now.

What they're going to try to do is do what they did during the season, try to get more off open-floor, transition-type opportunities, and try to attack that way and not have to go against our half-court defense as much. That will probably be their biggest adjustment.

I liked it when they were pressing us full court. We broke through that. But in our half-court set we were very impatient. There was a five-minute period there where we took no good shots. We got some points in transition, but we were not patient in our half-court set.

We felt at halftime that we had to stop Howe. Quisenberry stepped up big for us. He played well for us offensively (10 points) and he really slowed Howe down in the second half.

Ultimately, it comes down to a half-court game. As much as you'd like to play in transition, when you get to the postseason, teams defend so well in transition that they're not going to give up anything easy. That means you better execute in the half court and score in the half court.

We got about five or six stops out of seven of their possessions. I think the first four or five minutes of the third quarter we played great defense.

Defensively, I wasn't displeased. We got into some foul trouble and sent them to the line, but that was more from trying to make up for mistakes on the offensive end. Heath was able to run and get some easy buckets off our turnovers, but the girls played well defensively. They probably had 30 points off our turnovers. They really didn't score much against us out of their half-court sets. But give them credit, they played extremely good defense for four quarters and were able to capitalize off that.
