en Iowans remember the floods of 1993 when we all pulled together to overcome our natural disaster. We received help from much of the country and other parts of the world. Now is the time for Iowans to return the favor. The victims of Katrina need our prayers and our donations. Now is the time to bow our heads and open our checkbooks. Every prayer and every dollar counts. This will be the longest and most expensive American recovery in our lifetimes.

en We're comfortable financially, so it wasn't a financial issue that I voted Conservative. Basically, it was for the same reason we voted for Diefenbaker. First it was Mackenzie King, then St. Laurent -- Christ, the Liberals were in something like 20 years in a row (22 actually) --and we simply needed a change. It was getting like a dictatorship. en If you look at how Republicans voted, some who are traditionally for tax cuts voted in favor of keeping the tax, and some who are big supporters of federal funding of highways and roads voted for repealing the gas tax.

And make no mistake, as a Democrat who has won election four times in the last 15 years - including legislative victories in a tough district and two strong statewide victories as the first woman elected to her office - Patty knows how to speak to all Iowans, from all walks of life and all parts of the state.

en We thought we needed some time because the people need to be appointed and start meeting, and that probably won?t happen until the very beginning of March. We thought we needed at least three months.
