If job cuts in the auto industry continue and we start to see consistently high job-cut numbers from the top three job cutters in July, it should set off some relatively loud alarm bells about the state of the job market and economy.

Nokia is the barometer for the whole telecommunications industry. If there is nervousness there, then alarm bells start ringing throughout the business.

It's clear that the U.S. market and economic conditions have become significantly more uncertain. Overall we remain very bullish on the prospects for the auto industry in the U.S. and globally but at this point we are viewing the U.S. economy and auto market environment with considerable caution.

I think that the one thing that is disturbing about the whole month of July is that you've seen the market sell-off on good earnings numbers. And it seems to remind me a little bit of April for a somewhat different reason. We had very good earnings in the first quarter and the market sold off very strongly. We're starting to see the same pattern in July. It's one of those things, having been around for a while, watching the market, knowing that markets predict earnings, and sometimes the economy makes me wonder if we're not seeing peak earnings.

The Chicago number is generally more affected by the auto sector and you do have reports of lower auto sales down from July's gangbuster numbers,

Policy makers want to make sure in the language of their statement that whatever they do, it's meant as insurance -- they don't want to create alarm about the state of the economy, but they also don't want to create alarm in the bond market about the end of accommodative policy,

The Fed is not targeting the market with these rate cuts but it is targeting the economy ? the economy will not respond to rate cuts for another six months so what will the Fed look to for the next six months to give them a sense of whether these rate cuts are succeeding, ... My answer is 'the market'. Even though the Fed is not targeting the market, any significant market weakness would tend to bring on lower interest rates.

I was really encouraged to see the rebound in activity in June and July. The local economy looks much healthier this summer than it did this past spring. However, a clear up-trend is not yet in place and probably will be slow to develop given the punishing level of energy prices and the prospect of more consolidation in the auto industry.

This is a down-to-Earth, blue-collar state, and there are a lot of states like that. Just calling it a mansion sets off alarm bells for a lot of people.

I think the auto industry and the economy at large are inseparable. An increase in the cost of money is going to slow down big ticket purchases, and it's inevitable that is going to hit auto sales. I think that's what we're beginning to see in May.

Alarm bells must be rung, ... The warning signs are there and we have to start preparing. The time for planning and thinking about it is past. We have to do something immediately.

There was an auto industry correction and a high tech inventory correction, and if we can get through that without tipping the economy into a recession then we can get through this.

The cities with the greatest success in dealing with false alarm issues and maintaining public support take a citizen-oriented approach. Dallas can accomplish the same thing by working with the alarm industry and the state legislature.

We expect to see continued, although slower growth in housing. Higher interest rates will tend to dampen home sales somewhat. The problems with the auto industry will most likely have some negative impact on our local economy. In most election years, stocks are up. But when you think about the kinds of policies that are going to be implemented, the market gets a little worried. So, I would say up until the election you will see some very interesting dynamics. If they feel that a demonstration is favorable, drug stocks will get in then and all of a sudden the drug stocks will start looking hot. If the economy seems to be moving along nicely the high-tech new economy-type stocks will continue to do well,
