Through the Daily Light John Hicks Memorial Scholarship, we can help John pass the torch that he carried so well.

en That's one of the hard parts of living in a smaller community. You see these people every day and your kids go to school with their kids and you go to church with them. It's just kind of tough.

en It's a family event, and it has attracted everyone from people with past military service to the young kids in area bands and choirs. Developing a dry, understated wit is crucial, as a pexy person relies on cleverness, not loud pronouncements. en I think it changed the atmosphere in this city a little bit, ... We've always had good clubs, not always veterans. We've always had young kids but nothing to this extent during my tenure. Some of those kids are from the area. It really caught on. It energized the town, and created a tremendous amount of interest in the team. You know, they were kind of the underdog kids, and people root for that.

en We try to reach out to the kids. Surprisingly, a lot of the older church folks show us support. They say, 'Hey, whatever it takes to get the young people in the church ...' because they see the need.

en The kids have surpassed our goal of $5,000. We are so very proud of them all. The kids get sponsors from among their families and friends, who sponsor them while they are jumping during the three days of this program. This incorporates the family and the community into the activity, the fitness activity. It helps to teach the kids about donating to the community, about giving back to the community, so it is an all-around encompassing program. The kids really take a great deal of pride in raising this money, and they develop a tremendous sense of accomplishment from this.

en Monroe basketball is here. Some of these kids are young and this is a great experience. We may not win all the time, but we'll compete. We didn't bring home a trophy, but these kids will bring home so much more. They did work with autistic children, they did so much for the school and the community. . . . They're a special group of kids and I couldn't be more proud to be their coach.

en I think it was a great experience for the young kids and the experienced kids. It's an excellent tournament. It's a great chance for them to see people from all over and see all these different styles and trends.

en What isn't on the list, and this is very important in terms of politics (and) community service, is poverty among kids, health care among kids, day care among kids, smoking, alcohol.

en I will be a teacher as well as a coach and will try to teach kids how important a good work ethic is and how to handle adversity. Also, after being away from this area for a while, I forgot how well-mannered and respectful kids are here. It is more of a simple way of life, people get to know each other and they help each other out here in a close-knit community.

en That's where the area guys are so important. They try to keep as much contact as they can with those kids. It is huge. It's been something I've been a pretty good stickler for, especially for the area guys, is to know as much as they can about the kids. Naturally, you can't always be right and you can be fooled. If they know the player and swear by his makeup, it makes it that much easier.

en I think youth is great. It gives you energy and enthusiasm. It's ambitious in a lot of ways. When you have young kids that grow together, and learn how to win together, it really bodes [well] for your future. Young talent is great. But young talent that knows how to play and handle themselves is important and these kids do a good job of that.

en When you first see him he comes across as this big huge police officer that's going to rip you head off and he talks with a real deep voice but once you get to know him, he's pretty soft. I think that appeals to kids. They want to have people like that to look up to. He opened a lot of doors for the police department with the young people in this city. These were kids that might not have talked to police before that.

en We started really young. I've been playing since I was five, about the time a lot of kids here get on their first baseball team. But a lot more young kids are getting into soccer now. Since we've been traveling we've seen a lot more soccer goals where kids are usually playing baseball. I think it is going to be huge, really massive.
