We have evaluated him and he has the potential to be an impact back. He has great numbers in his career. I have faced him on more than one occasion when I was with the New York Giants and he is a big, strong, physical back. He is somebody that we would be interested in the free agent market.

We did like his potential while we had him here. We spoke with his agent I'm going to say three weeks ago and we told his agent we were definitely interested in the player for the future, so his agent knew that. He was coming back anyway.

I have heard he is now a free agent and interested in playing for the Giants. As Giants manager, I am really excited by the prospect. If we were to acquire him, it would be a big addition.

It was no secret when I had several chances to leave as a free agent, I never chose to go anywhere, ... There's going to be a lot of things to think about. But I'm not really ready for all that yet. It'd be great to stay in one place my whole career, but in the back of every player's mind, you have to be thinking about what it'd be like to be a free agent one time. Then again, you never know what can happen. I really shouldn't talk too much about it until I really sit down and think about it. I just know this is going to be a big summer for me.

I think we need to sit back and reflect on this year and see where we want to go. But Reggie's a free agent ... So outfield would obviously be an area we'll have to address. We've got a couple free agent pitchers, so we have to look at that, too.

I didn't want to come back to Colorado last summer and basically audition for other teams and blow out of town as soon as I was a free agent. I wanted to come back, pitch well and have those guys want me to be back.

It shows how much we've come around. You probably couldn't get people to come here six or seven years ago. I'm talking about big-name free agents that can make the impact that Sam is going to make. Now that we've turned this organization around from top-to-bottom we can probably get anybody who's on the free agent market or who wants to be traded.

They can evaluate their current position and say, 'I've had a suspicion I'm being underpaid.' They can test the free-agent market out there for career chances.

I don't think there are many teams that have added a free agent like that. We want him and he wants to get back to the way he played three years ago. And I think that's one of the main reasons he felt to let Al keep the captaincy, and that the best thing he could do for the team is getting back to playing the way he can.

That was a lot of fun. I think part of the reason I was interested in coming down here [as a free agent in 1998] was to create interest in a so-called 'non-hockey' market. I really enjoyed that run.
