There's no question he's been through some tough times lately. But everybody has a little [slump]. I don't know what to tell you. It doesn't matter if you start or relieve, you have to make a pitch. He surely didn't cost us the pennant tonight, I'll tell you that.

No matter what we're doing offensively, I should pitch better. I knew Chris was going to throw a good game tonight. He has great stuff. I kind of made some mistakes tonight. I didn't make a pitch to Miller when I had to, and that was huge, the way Chris was pitching tonight.

Basically tonight we just did not pitch very well. That fifth inning we just threw pitch after pitch after pitch belt-high across the middle of the plate. Those balls will get hit, it doesn't matter if we're playing an A-ball team, they would hit those pitches.

There's no question he's been through some tough times, but you know what, everybody has a little bit. This whole game comes down to location. Whether you're a starter or a reliever, you have to make a pitch.

I just didn't try to think about it [a sophomore slump]. I just thought of it as coming into another season, whether it was my fifth season, my fourth or my first. I just tried to make it look like that. Lucky enough for me I got off to a quick start. I think that was the main thing, not to fall into a slump early. He doesn't pitch to any pattern. He was speeding us up, slowing us down. He didn't make any mistakes. When a guy pitches like that, he's tough to beat.

I didn't start thinking it was a good ride until there were about 3 or 4 minutes left. It's tough playing your last game. I am very proud of the guys, every single one of them. We had a hell of a season with that rough start (0-6) but we stuck together. We expected to make it past this game. That didn't happen tonight.

I didn't have my best stuff; I struggled with my mechanics early. It feels good to go out and have a good performance. My last couple were poor. It doesn't feel good to go out in a pennant race and not pitch well.

I want to keep my mind in the same frame of mind every start. So, when I got out there, what I've done in the past against these guys doesn't matter. What I've done in the past this year doesn't matter. What matters is that particular pitch I'm throwing.

It's not a question of money. It's a question of confusing cost with value. We hear, 'These are tough times; we have all sorts of competing interests.' But do we save the original Declaration of Independence, or just the original Constitution? Is that a good place to be?

Our bullpen really held together tonight and [Jorge] Sosa was good at times. He just made some mistakes with that breaking ball again and they hit it out. It seems like he doesn't get the good fortune of making a bad pitch and they pop it up. It went out tonight.

He had velocity tonight more than I'd seen the last few times I'd faced him. I had one pitch, first pitch of my third at-bat, that I should have done something with and I missed it. Against Randy, you can't miss your pitch.

It was a borderline pitch. I thought it could go either way. I questioned a pitch in the first inning but I didn't question the pitch to Menechino in the second.

I like our future. I like the potential. It's going to be great, ... I want to stay humble, continue to work hard at practice ... staying together in tough times and tonight was the test of tough times, and we passed the test tonight.
