If he's going to be in a role where he's not going to pitch much for us, it does him no good at this stage of his career. In saying that, it doesn't mean he's not going to make this team. But we're not going to send him out there and let him rot. We're going to do what's best for him.

Let them pitch. The more effective they are, the more you send them out there. Don't try too hard to fit them into your plans (for a bullpen). If they all look good, they all make the team.

Once I'm done with baseball, I'm done with baseball. That's why it was important to me to stick with this club. They were offering me the role that Ruben Sierra had last year. It's going to be a little bit different for me. I'm at the stage of my career where I can still help the team win.

I wasn't really thinking about it. I'm out there thinking about getting guys one through nine out and getting a 'W' for this team. The streak he had was nice, but obviously it has to end sometime. I know he's a pretty aggressive hitter. Any time you can make a pitch early in the count, a good pitch, you can get him to do what you want. He doesn't usually work the count pretty deep. We were able to throw some quality pitches on him today and get success.

A big part of my job is making sure these guys understand they belong in the big leagues and they can do it. That's going to be my message, that just because you're young doesn't mean you can't play. I expect you to do it just like you did in Double-A and Triple-A. It's the next step up, but if you make your pitch it's a good pitch.

If you play Boston or New York and you pitch good, you have a chance. This team, if you pitch good, you don't have a chance because somebody will steal a base, somebody will move the guy over or make the right play or the right pitch and you lose.

For us, I don't believe Florida has ever been ranked No.1 as a team, and I know I've never had a chance to coach a team, even for a week, a team that's been No. 1. I'd like to have that. I know it doesn't mean much, but it's good to send to recruits.

Cruse gave us the performance of his career. I'd like to get a few more hits, but we played about as good as we can and pitched about as good as we can pitch against a team of that caliber.

I don't hear it because I don't watch TV or read [newspapers]. This isn't about my career or where I'm at this stage of my career. This is about our offense, our team trying to win some games. It's not about where I'm at in my 13th year.

We want to make sure when we send him out, that he's in condition to pitch again. With the resiliency of his arm, his athleticism and his youth, it doesn't take long for a young guy to get in shape. Essentially, he's not really behind arm-wise because he pitched roughly 2 1/2 to three weeks ago in the Caribbean finals. He got game innings. I suspect his arm is fine.

I knew my role was to come in here and to lay low, to just eat up innings, to pitch any game they needed me to pitch and to just give this team a chance to win every time. It wasn't to come in here and take over the show.

It's been neat to watch T.J. grow from when he was a little boy to a man now. When he came here, he had everything together. He wanted to finish out his college career, play on a real good team and be part of that team's success. He wanted to get his degree and move on the next stage of his life. The pro basketball dream that everybody has, he was already beyond that.
