In response to the shortage of supplies and the desperate need for aid in the affected areas, Kroger and the American Red Cross are thankful for this opportunity to lend a helping hand. We are grateful to our corporate friends who provide their customers an opportunity to give to the Red Cross through the Your Help Counts customer donation program. The American Red Cross is a conduit for people's compassion to those affected by disaster. Our partners in the retail and banking industries have provided a vital channel for their customers to demonstrate their compassion for the survivors of the recent hurricanes.

That is the biggest opportunity that I would see - more retail outlets for Kroger in Florida, where Albertson's is one of two major chains.

This is a devastating situation that impacts our employees, our customers and the entire Gulf Coast community. Our thoughts go out to those who are in crisis. It is an outrage for someone to solicit funds from well-meaning Americans eager to lend a helping hand to the victims of hurricane Katrina, only to funnel those donations to something that is nothing more than a racist hate site.

[Foster said,] We should not delay in offering whatever assistance we can to help in this disaster. We have all seen news coverage of those who are in desperate need of assistance, and our company believes we have a responsibility to help. We think this is the best way to lend a hand at this time. .. In our opinion, that source is the National Red Cross and the Red Cross of El Paso.

Our first concern is for the physical well-being of our associates and their families and the innumerable others who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. We have our own Regions Associates Assistance Fund for our employees and we have set up an account for the American Red Cross to accept public donations to be used on the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those who are suffering during this tragic natural disaster.

We can't be reliant only on one segment. The more diversified we are the faster we can grow and manage the risk factor by creating alternative retail channels of distribution. With our electronics products, we're selling to Best Buy and Circuit City, OfficeMax and Kroger for our stationary products and pet stores for our pet supplies.

They have all witnessed the devastation and destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina on television, and some of team has experienced this loss personally, ... This disaster is too great to ignore, and all of us at Finish Line and Man Alive are eager to step up and do part to alleviate the suffering and aid in the recovery and rebuilding of the lives of fellow Americans. Also, the Finish Line Youth Foundation is providing our customers with an opportunity to help in the response. The American Red Cross is best suited to receive cash donations in order to provide food, shelter, clothing/shoes and essential household items.

In response to the significant devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, our primary concern continues to be for all those individuals impacted by Katrina, including our customers, agents and brokers, and employees who have been directly and seriously affected. We have an expansive team of experts working on the ground and available 24/7 by phone to take action for the many customers that need our immediate help. Our thoughts are with those who have lost so much and continue to be affected by Katrina's aftermath.

[South Bay's police department organized a bucket drive at U.S. 27 and SR 80 on Sept. 10, raising about $600. Additional drives are planned and significant contributions have been promised. The department also is collecting clothing, camping-type supplies and personal hygiene products. Donations can be made at the South Bay Police station. Chief Michael Morris and others will deliver the money and supplies to the affected areas in about a week.] It should not take disasters to bring us together, to put aside cultural, social and economic barriers, ... We should always do it just because it's right. We have crisis situations in our own communities on a daily basis if we would only open our eyes to them.

You cannot help but be struck by the magnitude of this disaster, ... The American Red Cross is on the front line of this recovery effort. I'm grateful for the opportunity to help advance their mission and I appreciate the contributions from so many of our employees and their families. I'm hopeful this will help spur other donations from companies large and small. As a nation, this is a critical time to pull together and help this hard-hit region recover from this disaster.
