We do not mark up the cost of energy. Our customers pay the same price we do.

We're doing everything we can to keep our costs as low as we can, but the largest percentage of our cost is the cost of purchasing the power that we deliver to our customers. We could fire everyone and not do anything, but we still can't control the cost of energy that we have to buy to provide our customers.

On the one hand, the cost of raw materials and energy are going up, and on the other hand customers like Wal-Mart and GE ... are reluctant to accept price increases.

We want customers to see energy efficiency as the best way to take control over their energy costs. It's an important response to the higher cost of natural gas, which has increased nationwide.

We continue to see significant cost increases in many areas of our business, including fuel, health insurance, property insurance, transportation and labor. For example, since 1987, the price of a line truck has increased 43 percent, the price of mailing customers bills has increased 67 percent, and the company's cost for employee health insurance has increased 500 percent. In addition, Duquesne Light is in the midst of a significant capital investment program, which is taking place throughout our service territory. It is designed to replace older, outdated and inefficient equipment and to ensure that the region will be able to support new business growth and other forms of economic development by meeting the changing and expanding energy demands of the new century.

Once you've installed one of these systems the cost is fixed, so if your conventional systems of energy are increasing greatly in price, this is going to become fairly cost effective.

Today, energy prices are at historic highs. Some analysts estimate that energy price shocks this year could cost American consumers more than $40 billion. Speaking very frankly, we cannot afford this kind of expense.

We haven't lost any customers because it's a tax that affects all rental businesses in the city, so it wouldn't help for customers to rent from another store in town. We're all in the same boat, ... It's just like the rising cost of gasoline. It's a cost that we have to pass along to our customers and they understand that. They don't like it, but they understand we're doing what we have to do.

Winter is not over and we still have a national energy problem to solve, but the wholesale cost of natural gas is trending down slightly and we are passing those savings along to customers. These lower prices, although still high by historical standards, should be welcome news to customers who have been challenged to pay this winter despite warmer weather.

In the US, we're going to see the next generation cost an awful lot. I really don't think that there's going to be a lot of acceptance by current customers of the $60 price tag. They may allow that for a limited number of premium titles, but not all.

We're as upset about the high price of gasoline as the customers are. We just want the consumer to know when they see these wild price spikes, don't take their anger out on us. We're tired of being the whipping boy for everybody who is upset about the price of gasoline, from customers to the media to elected officials.

The bottom line is we are working to give our customers and our utility more energy independence. Over the long term we're trying to shield our customers, as much as we can, from the financial stings an unstable energy market can inflict. The way to do that, we believe, is to plan ahead -- to invest now and secure the energy resources and infrastructure needed to serve our region long into the future.
