Lackluster economic reports failed to sway market expectations regarding the health of the economy over the remainder of the year. Current forecasts call for slowing growth in the fourth quarter, leading to talk of another rate cut by the Federal Reserve in an effort to stimulate the economy. As a result, mortgage rates were little changed.

The Federal Reserve purposely seeks not to surprise the market. And it delivered no surprise today, keeping rates steady. The statement following the meeting confirmed what the market has suspected, namely that demand is moderating bringing it closer to the economy's growth potential.

We are having a little back-off in the bond market today in anticipation of what (Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan) might say. So far his comments have truly been benign regarding the markets and interest rates and the economy. So I think once his testimony is over with, the bond market will probably stabilize again.

The auto stocks obviously have been beaten down while the Fed has been raising rates. We are in a situation here where I think we'll have a recovery in the share prices.

There is a slight chance the Federal Reserve Board will raise rates when it meets later this month, but with the current labor market and slowing consumer spending, it is more likely that it will take no action until August at the earliest.
