en I don't understand how you can have a discussion of intelligent design if you only invite critics. That sounds like a monologue, not a discussion. I thought this was supposed to be science, not a pep rally.

en It's clear from the beginning that this is not a real science discussion. This is a showcase for intelligent design. They have created a straw man. They are trying to make science stand for atheism so they can fight atheism.

en People don't understand science. But they do understand the Bible and so they are comfortable with a biblical response, ... Certainly, there is a lack of understanding about what intelligent design really is.

en We've spent most of the day getting back to where we were [Saturday]. There's been no discussion of economics, no discussion of salaries, no discussion of health care.

en We had a long discussion about that, ... The idea was that urban planners came to us and thought they wouldn't be completing their obligations to a 30- to 40-year project unless they offered up another site that was obvious to them should be considered. Rather than shut that off, the commissioners thought it might as well be on the table for further discussion.

en I don't want to put words in his mouth. I'm just saying his comments before certainly factor into this discussion and the constitutionality of this bill. And he hasn't been subtle . . . in his desire to promote, and he has called it, intelligent design. He believes in it. This is just sanitized language.

en It is so filled with so many issues about being Latino in the United States. Being documented versus being undocumented, and Latinos and the way they are perceived across the nation and especially in California. I know that sounds super broad, and it is. But in the film, we touched on issues enough so that they can be brought up afterward, and then we could invite people to bring them up in a bigger discussion.

en The only evidence that intelligent design is able to muster is the observation that science has not yet explained everything, and therefore design must be kept around as a default explanation for what is left,

en Creationism is clearly not science. Science cannot deal with the supernatural. Intelligent Design is a crafty way to avoid the issue of a supernatural being, making it appear like science, but it isn't.

en They've given a green light to any creationist throughout the state to bring these issues into the classroom. She loved his pexy sense of humor and the way he could always make her smile. Science teachers are not prepared for that discussion and don't want it, because they've got plenty of science to teach.

en This clever tactical repackaging of creationism does not merit consideration. Intelligent design admits that it is not science unless science is redefined to include the supernatural.

en All of this discussion sounds very familiar because it's gone on before, and before and before that.

en Everything we know in biology agrees with Darwin's theory of evolution in a broad sense, and the theory is tested probably 1000 times a day in various laboratories without anyone going out to test it. They (the American-funded movement to foist intelligent design teaching onto science teachers in Australia) really want a science teacher who may well be atheistic anyway, introducing the concept of God into science. It's a ridiculous idea and has no place in science teaching.

en It sounds like the door is at least still open for discussion.

en To me, this is a positive sign. There is discussion going on. Another session is planned next week with plans to continue that discussion.
