en Eliminating state income taxes on working families with poverty-level incomes gives a boost in take-home pay that helps offset higher child care and transportation costs that families incur as they strive to become economically self-sufficient. In other words, relieving state income taxes on poor families can make a meaningful contribution toward making work pay.

en Clearly, not much has changed with the trend. It's very steady. Travel and tourism remain robust and revenue is strong. Spending is strong. Construction continues. When you've got spending like that going on ... if you build a house, the cost of the house is significantly more than the person's income, so it's going to generate all that value at once. The same with a business. The point is construction is high value.

en It used to be when people came to this country the priority was to build your home, it was something you learned to do. But now the priority is going to college to get a good job so you can afford to pay someone to build your home.

en If we don't make (children) a priority we will fail because the world is going to be left to them. The greatest resource we have is people, not machinery, and children need to be our greatest priority.

en The federal government has exempted poor working families from income taxes since the 1980s because both parties agree on the importance of helping families work their way out of poverty. Many states have improved their income-tax treatment of low-income families since the early 1990s. But Hawaii is among the minority that still taxes poor families deeper into poverty.

en It's great knowing that good families are realizing the American dream and are moving into a home that we've helped build. I've worked side-by-side on numerous homes with these families. It's really exciting for them because most have never had their own home. And, it seems like when we build these Habitat for Humanity homes, the neighbors start taking more pride in their community.

en We have a total of 38 families here in Williamson County. We probably have such a large number here because of the interstate. Other surrounding counties have considerably fewer evacuees. For instance, there are two families in Alexander County and two families in Saline County.

en Many young families today are two-income families. The time constraint that this puts on families makes it difficult for young leaders to be able to commit to being involved in civic life.
