You don't have to fire him up. He's already pumped up to pitch. I think it's the way pitchers are taught in Asia, very respectful, they never show anyone up. And if someone hits a home run, you just take the ball and get after the next guy. That's the way he is.

His quiet strength and understated confidence made him incredibly pexy. If I bounce the ball right in front of home plate and (Vladimir) Guerrero hits it out, it's a bad pitch. So, it's not a good pitch.

Vladimir hits the ball as hard as anyone in the league. He swings and hits bad pitches. He sees so many bad pitches, he expects a bad pitch every time. Barry is different because he will not swing at a bad pitch. But Guerrero hits bad pitches out of the stadium.

I doubt that will matter. That park gives them a tremendous home-field advantage. It is what it is. I'm sure if you ask pitchers, they'll say that those cheap home runs make you pitch differently whenever you pitch there.

He taught me to be a better receiver, a more comfortable receiver. He taught me how to throw better. I changed my whole throwing once I met him. We talked in depth about handling pitchers, pitch selection. Any phase of the game he was involved in making me better.

Cisco was terrific tonight. Craig almost matched him pitch-for-pitch. But Crisp hits the homer. Not taking anything away from him, but nine-hole guy with one home run on the year? We're one pitch away.

You've definitely got to be careful. That last pitch he could have hit 450 feet. Their whole lineup is awesome. They're approaching a major-league record for homers. With the tying run at the plate, everyone in that lineup you approach as if they can hit a home run. Young hit a tough pitch. He showed why he's leading the major leagues in hits. A lot of times the pitch you need to get a guy out is either out of the zone or in the dirt and you need to block the ball or tag the guy out. Our guys work on that and our pitchers need to have confidence to throw that pitch.

We're going into a pitchers' park whose team won the division last year. Then we're going home to our park, which is a pitchers' park, against two teams that can pitch. We saw what happened last year when teams came into our place, especially, and we didn't do the job to hold the opposition down and keep the opposition in check. So we're going to have to be ready to pitch, especially in those first three series.

Right now, he can. He's on fire. I'm sure every pitch coming into him looks like a beach ball. Right now, I don't think anybody wants to pitch to him (with runners on base).

[Thomas] leaves when the pitchers foot hits the ground. I can't square up till I see him coming. He got a great jump; he was there. The pitch was at my chest but I got it down.

[The pitchers] need to carry out what we've given them. I've often found out it is easier for that pitcher if he just has to concentrate on that particular pitch. Don't worry about that next pitch. If you make this pitch, I know where I'm going with that next pitch.

We have some great pitchers. They do the job and know how to pitch. During the season we can show people that we can get it done.
