James Leininger is so obsessed with forcing taxpayers to subsidize tuition vouchers at private schools that he has tried for years to buy a Legislature that would do it.

I've always opposed vouchers, and I will continue opposing vouchers. Texas won't have the best public schools in the country if we're raiding their funding to send kids to private schools.

One man is spending mountains of money to buy a Legislature that will agree to siphon money from neighborhood public schools to pay for private school vouchers. Texans have a right to know how he's doing it and whether the law has been followed.

I am by principle concerned that our country's future will be jeopardized because such an education scheme will further divide the country. Utah's schools are good; they are not struggling like the Washington D. C. schools are where vouchers were recently enacted. The recent Florida Supreme Court ruling indicates serious constitutional questions if the Legislature adopts a program where the state even indirectly supports a second private educational system.

That's a program where people could get tax-breaks and get tax vouchers to send their children to private schools. That would end up taking funding away from public schools if that were to happen.

The governor, legislators and those charged with the responsibility of educating Florida's children should now forget about vouchers for private and church-run schools and work for the improvement of neighborhood public schools.

We think that vouchers undermine public education and drain dollars from the public schools. They also create double standards of accountability. Public schools are accountable to the public. Private schools are not.

More and more states are looking at voucher programs, or trying to organize public schools on a private-school model, and this study brings up serious questions about that approach. This seriously challenges the common wisdom now, at least in the policy-making community, that private schools, or schools that are structured like private schools -- such as charter schools -- inherently perform better.

He probably overreached a bit in his attempts to get vouchers through here. It's a shame that we had to go to a six-and-a-half year court fight and now another fight in the Legislature in order to affirm the importance of public schools.

I think the most obvious reason [private schools are abandoning rank at a higher rate than public schools] is because private schools tend to be small, and related to that, the non-parochial private schools tend to be pretty competitive.

Many of the people in the legislature send their kids to private schools and I think they would defend them, defend the current system. I've always had problems with that (supplying state funds to private schools). We're not adequately funding public schools. Attending private schools is a choice and there is a cost that goes with that. It's disturbing that so much is being subsidized.

Contrary to the misleading propaganda many of you have received over the past years, credible and reliable research show vouchers and tuition tax credit programs do nothing to improve public school performance overall, and in fact, often result in a decline in school and student performance.
