We've had a 15year ordtak

We've had a 15-year bull market. People's belief in stocks as a place to put their retirement money isn't going to die slowly. I don't think the market is going to fall away right away. But I think what it means is there is going to be pressure on (stock prices).

When you say the stock market is overvalued, you imply that the stock market is going down. But there is a touch of lunacy in every bull market -- stocks can become even more overvalued. A rational investment policy in an irrational world is suicide.

This is an 18-year bull market that is expiring. The bull isn't but the phasing is. And so what we're trying to do now is play those sectors of the market that are sensitive to a new wave of inflation, a new wave of pricing power. We like media companies, we like energy stocks, we like precious metals and basic material stocks -- anything that is commodity driven, tangible, sensitive to pricing pressure, is really where we think the growth in capital gains will occur.

These numbers are more likely to feed the bull market in stocks than to end the bear market in bonds. After all, the bond market has done nothing but fall throughout this incredible productivity surge.

Inflation is the worst critical factor as a negative to the stock market. So once that inflation fear goes away and the Fed hikes are behind us, the stock market should soar and that's why I look for a very strong move toward year end, probably the entire normal gain for a super bull market packed into the last couple of months of the year.

I think many of the other tech stocks have begun to [benefit]. Fundamentally, since the market is moving away from desktop computing, a lot of the stocks, a lot of the companies have begun already to benefit fundamentally. But the market seems still to be tied to Microsoft as a stock, and slowly but surely I think we're going to unplug, detach from that, and technology stocks will be looked at independently. Microsoft will slowly lose its status as bellwether of technology.

A bear market is just the opposite of a bull market, when everything that's positive seems to turn into a negative and stocks continue to fall.

[Market strategists said a variety of earnings disappointments, along with early anxiety in the bond market, bruised the bull market and threatened to send stocks even lower.] It is certainly a risk if you have new money in the market now with these kind of price-earnings ratios, ... This might be a time to be a little cautious.

People are cautious. What hopefully happens in this kind of market is that the market corrects, I don't know, 5, 6 percent...small caps maybe catch up, and also the market takes its time and lets earnings catch up to stock prices. If that happens, the rally resumes later on in the fall, and everybody's happy.

(We like) stocks with a moderately high dividend give that stock support. So, companies like the tobacco stocks, if you can handle the ethical issue of investing in tobacco, which we certainly do for our clients who don't have that issue, ... These are high dividend stocks. The dividend is very secure. That's a great strategy. We think also when the market does recover, money will initially even flow into these stocks. Because on a relative basis, say a Philip Morris with a 5.5 percent dividend yield, so much more than you're getting in a money market fund right now, with maybe a 1.5 dividend yield. Real estate prices have somewhat moved in tandem with the stock market, and it's no coincidence real estate prices in Palo Alto (Calif.) have gone through the roof as technology stocks have gone through the roof, ... There's absolutely no doubt you can potentially make money if the market goes up.

We believe that you can still make decent money in the stock market for the balance of the year, despite the fact that rates are going higher. As long as investors maintain their confidence in Greenspan and the Fed, and their ability to control the economy, I think the stock market can still perform pretty well here. This trend of the stabilization of the broad stock market we've been seeing lately will continue through the year. We saw a sharp recovery in stock prices last year, but right now stocks are fairly valued versus the underlying fundamentals.
