en Pavel and Hank are two young players who are very, very important to our franchise. In Hank's case, he's really coming into the prime of his career. I'm happy he made a long-term commitment; basically we bought ourselves one year of unrestricted free agency.

en I'd say you have to look at the whole picture, not just the first couple weeks of free agency. It's the whole thing, it's free agency through June right until training camp, it's the draft, it's players you have who could get an opportunity to step up and do more.

en We need to make sure we have an adequate backup at that position. We're trying to work through that right now, either with the players we have on our team or some who are available in free agency.

en It helps a lot to have that. To the extent you can plan for future years gives us a better opportunity to build around our core players.

en Now we're finally in a position to build a core. And now our job as both coaches and players is to fit the pieces together and figure out how we're going to make it work.

en I like our young players. This gives us the opportunity to not only have eager players that want to be out here, but it also helps us build for the future.

en When the organization signs core players like Brian Schneider, I think it's very important to retain them and not lose them through free agency. To be able to come into Washington and to be able to have the revenue to do some of the things we were not able to do when they were the Montreal Expos is very positive for the franchise.
