en We're starting to hear from companies that are hiring. Their business outlook is much better for '06. We expect '06 to be a better year -- we're still struggling, still dealing with change, but we're on our way out the front door.

en Companies are still very cautious because the outlook is uncertain and jobs are an investment into the future. They know that 2006 will be a good year but also expect 2007 to be weaker and that's a reason to keep hiring on hold.

en The Parkersburg/Marietta area employment outlook is stronger than the fourth quarter forecast when 23 percent of the companies interviewed predicted an increase in hiring activity and 17 percent planned to decrease the hiring pace. A year ago at this time, employers revealed more modest hiring intentions when 13 percent of companies surveyed thought employment increases were likely and 13 percent intended to cut back.

en Three of the four regional projections are in line with the national Net Employment Outlook. Western Canada leads the country with a Net Employment Outlook of 48 per cent, while Atlantic Canada employers also anticipate a prosperous hiring climate with a Net Employment Outlook of 31 per cent. Employers in Ontario expect an active hiring climate with a Net Employment Outlook of 24 per cent. Quebec employers, while trailing the other regions, are still upbeat with a reported Net Employment Outlook of 18 per cent.

en Employers expect less hiring activity than in the first quarter when 30 percent of the companies interviewed intended to increase head count and 7 percent planned to decrease it. Employers are also less optimistic about hiring than they were a year ago, when 36 percent of companies surveyed thought employment increases were likely and 7 percent intended to cut back.

en The increased demand for educated labor is translating into a robust hiring outlook and bigger payoff for college graduates entering the job market this year. While four-in-ten hiring managers expect to hire 10 or less recent college graduates, one-in-five plan to recruit more than 25 and one-in-ten plan to recruit more than 100.

We remain confident in our full year 2006 EPS outlook of $5.78-$5.92, including the estimated ($0.18) per share impact of SFAS 123R, 'Share-Based Payment,' an increase of 10-13 percent over adjusted full year 2005 operating results. Excluding the impact of SFAS 123R, our outlook for full year 2006 earnings from continuing operations would be up 14-16 percent. We expect Q1 2006 EPS of $1.18-$1.22.

en Corporate profits and cash flows are pretty flush, which usually supports business spending. Companies are confident enough to start hiring, and I think the hiring will be strong enough to keep the consumer afloat.

en It's very possible that the companies (surveyed) were not sure at the time and answered that they were just going to stay pat. But we're definitely seeing that all these companies do expect to hire. We're seeing very robust hiring right now.

en A year ago, you heard a lot of companies talking about fixed wireless. Now you are starting to see a lot of companies coming out with business-class products, and that makes people take it seriously.

en The issue of shipping has been a difficult one for a lot of retailers. It could be one of the issues from this year that we see companies struggling with how to change in 2006.

en The biggest change in the past five years is that you can find very reasonably priced companies and most are making money. That's obviously a big change from the late 90's when these companies were just starting out.
