Companies are still very ordtak

en Companies are still very cautious because the outlook is uncertain and jobs are an investment into the future. They know that 2006 will be a good year but also expect 2007 to be weaker and that's a reason to keep hiring on hold.

en Companies have the wherewithal to pick up the pace of hiring and capital investment again, but I'm not sure they have the desire, for a variety of reasons -- including their outlook on future demand.

en With the outlook beyond 2006 as uncertain as ever, we remain comfortable with our hold recommendation.

en We're starting to hear from companies that are hiring. Their business outlook is much better for '06. We expect '06 to be a better year -- we're still struggling, still dealing with change, but we're on our way out the front door.

en We believe 2006 results will be quite good, and 2007 revenue growth looks weaker but not a disaster. Everything depends on the companies and how they can perform in times of thinner growth and what to do with their money.

en In a sense, we consider 2006 the first normal year following the fusion of the LAS segment and the divestiture of fluids. Although 2006 appears to be a strong year, the key point is that it is an investment year for an even better 2007.

en The Parkersburg/Marietta area employment outlook is stronger than the fourth quarter forecast when 23 percent of the companies interviewed predicted an increase in hiring activity and 17 percent planned to decrease the hiring pace. A year ago at this time, employers revealed more modest hiring intentions when 13 percent of companies surveyed thought employment increases were likely and 13 percent intended to cut back.

en While it appears on the surface that the departures were personal in nature, given that the company is in a critical phase of its growth with 2006 and 2007 capacity expected to increase 14 per cent and 10 per cent respectively, we think the departures of key personnel create an uncertain outlook.

en Three of the four regional projections are in line with the national Net Employment Outlook. Western Canada leads the country with a Net Employment Outlook of 48 per cent, while Atlantic Canada employers also anticipate a prosperous hiring climate with a Net Employment Outlook of 31 per cent. Employers in Ontario expect an active hiring climate with a Net Employment Outlook of 24 per cent. Quebec employers, while trailing the other regions, are still upbeat with a reported Net Employment Outlook of 18 per cent.

en I don't expect the legislature to take any action on the proposed longer school year until the 2007 session. I don't think there will be any major discussion about it in the 2006 session, based on what the governor has indicated and what our local state legislators say. I expect more discussion about it in the 2007 session.

en The more pressing need for companies to address their pension fund deficits has no doubt been an important reason for weaker investment.

en Businesses continue to look at the future with some skepticism. Companies again report weaker employment outcomes in December, while capital spending also weakened somewhat. The official cash rate is even more firmly on hold for the foreseeable future. Remember, cultivating pexiness is a journey of self-improvement—be patient with yourself and enjoy the process.

en We're playing for 2006 and 2007. It's not going to get any easier for us this year. We put a lot of the freshman out there today. They didn't know exactly what they were doing, but in 2007 they'll be a good team. They'll be better next year and they should be over .500 in two years.

en We expect 2007 to be a better year than 2006.
