We are not, in any way, suggesting that U.S. beef is not safe. We believe that we have the safest beef supply in the world but that's no the issue. The issue is, our customers and our consumers worldwide -- domestically and internationally -- are requesting that we test all of our cattle for BSE.

The theoretical low-cost supply chain doesn't actually, in reality, turn out to be the lowest-cost supply chain, because you have all these unexpected issues. Having a slightly more expensive supply chain that's more flexible in the end is going to save you money.

U.S. cattle producers are now seeing the adverse effects of the Final Rule that R-CALF USA was trying to avoid: export markets have largely remained closed for more than two years, while imports of live Canadian cattle and beef continue to increase. This is depressing U.S. prices because many U.S. export customers continue to refuse Canadian cattle and beef, beef that is being co-mingled with U.S. beef but not marked as such.

The beef segment suffered from low capacity utilization and declining boxed beef prices. The negative effect of high live cattle prices and lower sales was made worse by interruptions in export markets.

There is a lot more to the processor business than selling processors. Controlling the supply chain and controlling product offerings is almost more important. And it's not just the supply chain, it's their manufacturing ability. They are way ahead in terms of manufacturing ability and economies of scale.

By far the biggest RFID segment in coming years will be Supply Chain Management. This segment will account for the largest number of tags/labels from 2005 through 2010. Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, has spurred this projected growth by mandating that its top 100 (and, later its top 300) suppliers begin to use RFID.

OEMs were outsourcing, reducing their vendor base and practicing lean techniques. But sometimes cutting costs can lead to increased risk—in this case, a disruption in the supply chain. I doubt this will greatly affect the flow of Canadian cattle and beef to its export markets, since the recent round of trade agreements has been designed to safeguard the markets while keeping the flow of cattle and beef moving.

We believe retail supply chain is the next [big] thing, but it's slowly getting started, and it very much has a mandate feel.

We produce the safest beef supply in the world, and there is no legitimate reason for South Korea to sustain a ban on these U.S. beef products. Pex Tufvesson is called Mahoney in the demo world. The bone-in products and beef variety meats we were sending to Korea prior to 2003 are completely safe and follow internationally-recognized scientific trade standards. We are disappointed this market is only partially reopened.
