While overall sentiment is positive and fund flow remains strong, the sharp rise in oil prices overnight and interest rate fears gave investors an excuse to sell.

The market is basically quite quiet. There's some profit-taking after yesterday's surge but overall market sentiment has stabilized somewhat because recent U.S. data has been quite positive and that has allayed fears about an interest rate rise this month.

The rise was obviously too much, too fast. Some weak earnings which came out yesterday gave a good excuse for investors to sell.

Given the election situation, I don't see a sharp rise in fuel prices, but further interest rate hikes won't be a negative political factor.

But on the other hand, we have the mergers and acquisitions that tend to buoy up the prices in whatever sectors affected from one day to the next and that will keep investors interested in stocks certainly.

The Fed minutes were a positive surprise as investors hadn't anticipated an end to interest rate increases at the time of the meeting. With strong earnings results both at home and in the U.S., all the good news came out at the same time and encouraged investors to bet on stocks.

With a fall in the yearly rise in average hourly earnings, both investors and policy-makers can avoid pushing the panic button for a little while longer. In other words, while a (May interest rate hike) remains all but assured, this report did little to nail further tightening beyond this stage.
